Tabata method

I have heard alot of good things about the Tabata method (and have tried it myself), but is it enough to increase my fight cardio (I guess Anerobic conditioning)? I mean, is 4 minutes really enough cardio for a day? Most MMA fights are 3 5minute rounds, and 4 minutes doesn't even cover one round. What are your thoughts on this? I have been doing HIIT (in the form of GPP), but I am unsure of which one is better. I plan on doing cardio 3 times a week (M-W-F), and I have Muay Thai and BJJ 3 days a week as well (M-Tue-Thu). Is this enough?

The consensus here is to do a mix of training to cover all your bases. I would tend to agree with that. Use tabata and shorter HIIT for anaerobic power, mid duration cardio and throw in a longer session here and there.

Thanks for the info, I'll do that. Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I am kind of new to combat athletics.

If you've done 4 minutes of Tabata training, then you know how intense it is. If you're conditioned enough, the try stacking Tabata intervals. You could also change up the work/rest intervals to simulate 5 minute MMA rounds, and do THREE stacked 5 minute Tabata rounds with 1 minute of rest. If you were so insanely inclined.

Obviously, like Sonny said, a mix it best. Personally, I do HIIT bag work, Tabatas (rarely), sprints, and the occasional 5km run (rarely)

That's a great idea for fighters. Do tabata intervals for five minutes, rest 1 or 2 minutes and then repeat.
