Swimming?

Is swimming an effective way of conditioning the body for fighting? As far as I know its the most full body workout around. Do you think it will help my cardio/ weight cut? I'm planning on trying this out for my next fight(2 weeks away)and see if it can give me any improvements in cardio as opposed to my last fight when I gassed after fighting for a submission for far too long.

swimming is great excercise, but the problem is most people are efficient enough at it to make it into a cardio workout.

Attempting a submission too long would probably cause extreme muscle fatigue which I don't think has as much to do with your cardio as in gassing.

Yes it is.

It builds endurance and cardio.

Nick Diaz has been swimming from a young age and he has stamina for days. The guys throws disgusting amounts of punches per fight, and still looks in shape. You work out your arms and shoulders in swimming, which translates directly to keeping your arms up and strong while striking.

This. I have swam for around 13 years now and I can give you a pretty good answer to your problem. For some people, swimming can be a great full body workout. For others, it can be more of an annoyance. If you have no past swimming experience, try to remember these rules:

1. Keep your head down while you swim. None of this looking forward crap that I see people do all the time. Your eyes should be looking almost directly at the bottom of the pool.

2. If you can, breathe to the side. This will keep you from interrupting your stroke making it easier to go for more than one lap (if this is your first time).

3. Always warm up first. If you are more experienced, this should be around 1000 yards or so just to get the muscles going.

4. Stretch. Stretch before and after you swim. It is very easy to pull a muscle if you do not.

5. Always warm down. If you do no warm down, you will feel awful the next day trust me. A warm down can be just a few laps of easy swimming.

If you want me to write you a practice (based on your experience) feel free to PM me.

Not only do you work your arms and shoulders, you work your legs, abs, neck, lower back, just about anything you can think of. This can help with any aspect of your stand up game and ground game.

I used to swim competitively too but I felt I always got a better workout because I was so inefficient at it. I was the guy who used strength and no technique.

Just recently I've taken up swimming CORRECTLY in order to help my cardio for Wrestling/Jiu-Jitsu.

I found this program called "Total Immersion", it stresses long strokes with minimal effort (first time seeing the relaxed kick with the legs). It looked like a good program but I was wondering if the strokes are "too relaxed", thus not giving me a good workout. Or is this video just a tutorial and could I just speed up the technique in order to get a workout...

Thoughts?

if you wont to do swimming for fitness, i would incorparate a pull boy and a kick board, these really focus on the upper body and lower body if used correctly.

Basically you put a pull boy between your legs and just stroke without kicking and the pull boy will keep your legs afloat, and the kick board is kind of self explanatory
