Strike conditioning

I've been training in Muay Thai for a few months now and I was wondering what kind of physiological changes happen in the muscles to cause an adaptation to strikes. Why in the beginning getting not too strong low kicks on your quads is definitely painful and causes bruises while the more kicks you get the less painful it becomes?
I speculated it might depend on the growth of non-contractile elements in the muscles but I was wondering if anyone of you has got better evidence on that?
Any opinion on the subject is appreciated, even if just anecdotical.

Yeah, alot of very educated people think it has to do with nerve endings going 'numb' for lack of a better term. But I know the truth, it's all voodoo and magic.

Of course the answer is- you adapt. Power lifters have a greater muscle density than yer average dude, body conditioning works- bone density increases, you manage pain better, nerve endings get killed off. Run o the mill voodoo..

I know it's conditioning but while it pretty easy to understand bone conditioning and muscle conditioning as a response to a training stimulus I find it somewhat puzzling to explain what physiological changes occur in the muscle during the conditioning process to strikes....although somebody already knows it's all about voodoo and magic

Ever play football-I mean the american style gridiron, a full season worth? Same thing- the first few weeks are the worst, bruises, pain, etc, then(cause I was younger) it all starts to go away.
Same thing applies to mental exertion- you may not learn all that much from school, but you do get smarter the more you use your brain, and yes the first part of a new semester it starts to hurt - especially the calculus, I hate math.

Are there any far reaching consequences to nerve endings going "numb"? Like anything I need to worry about years from now AFTER i'm done fighting?
