I'd love to
But my fucking body has since decided to become alergic to chlorine
Swimming is brillant for the lungs and tendons

Hey, I just thought I'd check back in and see what you said. Most of you thought I should stick with the running with more mileage, so I'll stick to that. As for the person who said, I should accept what people say because I asked for a "straight answer", I don't believe a straight answer has anything to do with tossing out insults. You might recall that guy called me an "indolent twat"?
Maybe in some assholes' views, giving a straight answer means being insulting and just saying whatever pops into your head, but to most people it just means getting right to the facts--which doesn't require you to give up basic courtesy.
I also might mention, that when I was in the Navy, one of the running coaches whose job it was to work with people who didn't pass their running tests said the worst person he ever had to work with was as tall as me and THINNER. And you don't get into the Navy with asthma.
I'm not making excuses, but I don't like the idea that some people think my endurance is low PURELY cause I'm just inhumanly lazy. While I may need to increase my work rate, and will, that isn't any different than any other person--I suppose no one here has ever realized that what they THOUGHT was their best effort at something, wasn't?
More to the point, it is possible to be disadvantaged in some area without being flat-out crippled or sick. What some of you are suggesting is akin to saying there are retarded people, average people, and geniuses. It's like saying there is no space for slow or below average--anybody who falls into that category must be average but just too damn lazy to think.

some people do lack those skills you take for granted in basic courtesy, the messege however remains the same
put the work in.
if your fitness is low then thats what u should be focusing on, especially if it is something u are aware of
you said it yourself "im not making any excuses" but then you go on to say how it is possible to be disadvantaged etcetc
so it sounds like you are making excuses but want to convince yourself you are not, just an observation
dont compare yourself to others either, nobody is average, no-one is below or above either. there is only you, and only you matter.
you should strive to improve what you have regardless of anybody else
if you are unfit, no problem get fitter!
when you are fitter, good job, but get even fitter!
you will always get asshole putting you down, but sometimes even they have somehing to teach you

I can live with that. In fact, I'm posting this as I run! Aren't laptops wonderful! Seriously, I am about to go take a run, thanks for input exclamatio. I'll come back when I've got tank abott-like endurance, or in a month or two, whichever comes sooner!

Standard-excellent point. Wildcard_seven, I started with way less than that. In high school I couldn't EVEN run one mile. In gym class I walked the mile test every year. Maybe you're not a natural runner either but there are tons of ways to build conditioning. Burpees, intervals, drilling, plyos, shadow boxing, jump rope and of course the Stairmaster and treadmill...the list continues. Just gotta say fuck it and come uo with a plan.

Lots of good ideas listed here and I think the short and sweet of it is you need to stick with something year-round. Improving your stamina is all about consistency. You have to "use it or lose it", the scientific definition:
The Use/Disuse Principle - This principle states that the body will adapt to the stresses that you impose on it by increasing in strength, power and stamina. For example, when lifting weights, your body responds when you're consistently using those muscles in training. At the same time, your muscles also response to disuse. When you stop working a certain muscle group, the muscles react to the reduced activity by decreasing in size and strength. Your heart is a muscle, so you've got to work it often if you expect any gains in cardiovascular endurance.
