Sore knees?

I ride my bike alot (about 12 miles everyday with every Sunday off) but lately my knees have become sore and I can't figure out why. I'll try to describe the pain as best I can:

It's in the front of my knees, and doesn't feel related to muscles. Tendons maybe? They're really stiff and stretching makes them feel better.

Icing them down helps, but I need some way to prevent the pain from ever occurring. Any ideas? I was thinking tendonitis, but I really don't feel like going to the doctor.

I don't know where you live, but it's not uncommon to happen when it gets colder outside. I'd hate to be wrong, but it just sounds like aches/pains. A coworker of mine recently said his knees feel like you stated when it gets cold at the workplace (gets a bit chilly inside the building). If it's 50's or colder and I'm running in shorts, the same happens to me, and it has for years, even though zero knee problems here. Maybe a full-legged nylon bottoms will help warm the legs up during the ride.

I'm assuming the knees aren't preventing you from anything, but you're concerned about the pain.

No, the pain isn't bad enough to keep me from doing anything, but I'd rather be cautious since this is my first time taking my workout seriously. Thanks for your help.

Adjust your seat. I had the same problem when the seat on my bike was too low. Get it so that your knee is only slightly bent at the bottom of your pedal stroke and your hips shouldn't sway.

Thanks man... I'll try this on my afternoon ride.

You might also be riding in too high a gear. There is an ideal rpm range for pedalling, around 110-120rpm I think, which is apparently optimum for energy expenditure and minimising joint stress. Crank it down a bit and the pain may well subside.

Well, I just got back from eating/showering after my afternoon ride, and it appears my seat height was the problem. I cranked it up to the height you guys told me, and my knees feel great. Thanks a bunch!
