Because you never leave a man behind. Plain and simple. The guys you train and fight with are closer than brothers to you, so why leave your brother out there? Get him home and give him a proper burial.

Plus you don't want to see the mutilated corpses of our men being shown off on Al-Jazeera.

I personally think it's because men work harder for a larger than life ideal. I suppose there's also the possibility that they are not in fact, dead.

In the end, would you feel more motivated to fight and die for a group that considers you a comrade, even in death, or a sack of meat to be discarded because you're no longer worth anything?

I have never been a member of the armed services, this is just part of the way I look at the question.

This is true from my understanding (LOOOONG line of Military Family). Military are not machines, and we can't overspecialize as to say only the rational should be allowed. If that were true then it'd be entirely overlooked that the Confederate Army surrendered largely on the heels of admitting blacks into their ranks to re-fortify their numbers. With this hypocrisy in-place, Fighting onward was moot.

People have to believe in what they're fighting for, trust who they're fighting with, be supported by who their fighting on behalf of, etc. It might not make the most sense on paper, but Families getting back SOMETHING of ones they've lost means support, without support of the people and willingness of people to become Soldiers, a Military doesn't exist.

Thanks for the replies. I get what you are saying, but maybe it's hard to understand if you aren't in the situation. All I know is that I wouldn't want anyone to die over my dead body under any circumstances.

Better way of saying what I was reaching at, plus I never knew about the admittance of blacks into the confederate army / surrender connection. Thanks.
