Some help for a noob, Please :O

First off i'd like to say thank you for any advice I may get and sorry if this is in the wrong Forum.

Well, I've wanted to box since I was 8, my mom was strictly against it, 18 now, and Im starting to box. Got a trainer lined up and everything, and I can't wait, Im dedicated to it 110%.

I recently signed up for a gym for 4 months(weight lifting not boxing) and after a few people telling me Weightlifting and boxing don't mix, i feel like I wasted $140, which brings me to my first question, Is their any weight program that wont make me gain weight(actually i want to lose, but that will be brought up later),keep or raise my speed, and add strength? or is what im hearing wrong?

If i were to have a weakness, it would be one thing, Beer. I love beer, not so much i love to get drunk(i enjoy it, somtimes) but i just love beer.I'd no problem laying off the stuff during training and what not, but since this past summer, I gained a lot of beer weight, going into the summer i was 5'8 135lb, I now way, 170, don't be too shocked, not ALL of that is fat, but I would say too much of it is, does anyone forsee this to be a huge problem? and can anyone recommend an additional running program to lose the weight, even If I can get back down to 140, 145, that would be awsome, my reach is 70" so i have a slightly longer reach than most at my height.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions in advance.

Check out King Kabuki's log in S&P. Also look for posts by Vilo Magee (spell).

From what I recall they both are into boxing at least at the amature (spell) level.

Yes you can mix because I do. You can its just kind of hard to when youre tired one day and the next youre doing push ups and crunches and youre tired.

If you plan on ever fighting you need to lay off the beer. I know people that have been training alot and have decent cardio because they drink alot. For how much they do they should have awesome cardio.

In away you will lose speed when you weight lift, but I dont think its an issue you need to worry about. Look up Fast twitch and Slow twitch musle fibers about the whole concept of weight training= hindering speed.

hmmmm if you do really want to lose the weight i would say lay off the sauce. Weight Lifting done properly will help you in boxing, but won't build up your hand speed. If you do have a trainer ask him if he can reccomend any training routines. You can also do calisthenics, push ups, squats, sit ups, lunges, dips, or whatever you know that will help you. If you are training for a fight for sure i would say quit drinking if you want to get back down to 140 or 145 beer won't help you lose any weight. Good luck man
