Skipping : can't handle da Riddum

Hey Just got back from training and I got a fairly big problem I can't skip for more than 7-10 skips without hitting the back of my head. another problem I'm having is I can't get used to switch up my footwork I just keep jumping with my feet together and trip the second I try to change it

Just keep trying, thats all these is to it. I was like you a few weeks ago, but now I can skip for a few minutes without screwing up. Just takes patience and practice.

How's your rope? Is it long enough? I had a rope the other day I just had to get rid of. The thing would never keep straight. It was plastic and even just laying on the ground it'd be all twisted up. It was trying to jump rope with a really twisted up jump rope.

i'd say keep practicing but also if you hold your arms out further from your waists then the rope will have less slack to fly under your feet which may cause you to be tripping. And if you keep your hands close to your waist then there will be plenty of slack to hop over. i mention this because one of my friends was jumping rope and i noticed that she had her hands out so far from her waists that she had to leap extra high when the rope would slide under her feet.

i'm sure if you really keep at it and practice you should do fine. i used to be horrible and now i'm at rocky level hopefully one day i'll be at ross'

God, I know what you mean. When I first started skipping I bought some Nike shit, $15 bux, I've had it for like a month and its STILL tangled...So I've been using some $2 rope and it rocks.

Man, I have never heard of the rope hitting the back of anyone's head. I'd bet my paycheck that either that rope is WAY too short, or you have arms like an ape that go past your knees.

Proper rope length: Stand in the middle of a jump rope, both feet together, and the handles should touch your armpits.

Lay off the Jello pudding, Bill...

I was having the same problem. Well, not the back of the head, but I was clicking out every twenty jumps or so. I focused on just going with plain skips (feet together, no switches) for the duration when I was getting started, so as to allow my calves to build up and my cardio to improve. Once I got my body acclimated to the work, I started building in the cool shit. Now I can break it down like Soul Train.

I'm trying to get skipping into my workout as an endurance exercise but don't really know what a good fitness target is. Today I did a continuous 50min skip, whipping the rope over pretty fast, and my heart rate monitor had me at 160-170 bpm from 10min through to 50min (my resting is 52-55).

Can anyone who knows the science of this comment where that stands on the hopeless-godlike fitness scale?

Nick
