SHIN SPLINTS! Is there a cure?

Hi, I know I may have started a thread similar to this before. But I've been suffering from shin splints for over a year now and the advice that people have told me were to...

- Take a real, real long break from jogging and running (which I've done).
- Buy some running shoes (which I've done).
- After the long break and you finally decide to get back into running again, use Icey Hot cream on the shins (which I've done).
- Work on the muscles around the Tibia so it will prevent it. (Which I've done. Trust me, I did hundreds of them.)
- Ice it every night. (Which I've also done)

Sooo... What I was wondering is... If you guys have any good advice on cures; please let me know. In examples like if theres a certain type of running shoe that is good for it etc...

What kind of shoes I should be using while...
- Stair climbing
- Jogging
- Sprinting
- Or any other cardio activity etc...

- Thank you for your time and effort into considering reading this.

Yours Truly,
Kevin

You bought running shoes but are you sure they are the right ones? if you didn't, try going to an actual running store where they can help you pick the shoe that is right for the way you walk. You can spend hundreds on a top end shoe but it could be designed for someone that rolls their feet in the other direction and it will make things worse.

Can you run on grass or another soft surface? even with good shoes there is only soo much impact my legs can take at my weight before causing pain.

What exercises were you doing to correct this issue?

You should be able to use the same shoe for all of the activities you listed.

Well... Trust me I run on grass too. It still hurts like heck. I mean am I suppose to take a two year lay off from running, just for my shins or what?

Well provided you have the right shoes etc. then you may want to get them checked out, i've never had them that bad but i've read you can cause alot of damage if you keep running with them.

dont do any sport or running, jogging, etc. AT ALL

do try some tai chi, yoga, stretching, physical therapy.

I had bad shin splints in high school from football mostly, but also basketball & track.

Had to quit all of it. Started chinese ma, and never ran or did sports again.

I do use the elliptical and bike for cardio; but never the treadmill. There are better ways to conditioning than to wear out your knees, ankles, ach, by the harsh effects of running. Our track coach in high school couldnt even run anymore; had to superwalk; and always walked like a duck. He blamed it on running on hard surfaces.

also my brother had it, and the doc told him it was borderline a chronic injury basically not to do sports anymore or he would be in pain for life. But like i said; there are other and better exercises for conditioning besides running etc.
but this is just from my experience for what its worth.
