Shin splints

Okay, so I got done with a dance concert about three weeks ago(yes i was in a dance concert, but I did get to go watch girls in tights stretch everyday, so don't knock it) and we were on a hard wood floor, which gave me really bad shin splints. I've been taking it easy for the past few weeks, but everytime I try to get back into leg exercise, they start to act up again.

So basically, do you guys have any advice or tricks for taking care of shin splints? I've tried waiting it out, and they still haven't gotten better, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had what I thought was Shin Splints but it was actually just inflammated tendons from excessive walking and running. If I was you I would just ice it and rest it on a stool when youre at home. Also try to stop any hard running or long walking until the pain goes away.

Mine took about 2 weeks to fully go.

You know I used to run A LOT and I had all kinds of problems and then someone gave me a piece of advice that has worked fantastically.

WALK BACKWARDS!

The lady that told me this was an exercise physiologist and she explained that shin splints are caused by over development of the calf muscles or excessive strain causing micro-tears in the connective tissue on the front of the calf. (my words not hers she was much more technical) at any rate walking backwards develops a lot of the opposite sets of muscles.

I don't claim to understand it, but I can tell you it does work.

ya sssmashing is right, shin splints are caused because the calf muscles are contracted about 2000 time a day(from walking). You can walk on your heels with shoes, that would help the most.

im starting to get them again myself but thats probably cause i went from not running in 3 months to doing sprints again. my legs are getting tired before my lungs, sigh.

Ice, stretch before, stretch after and know your limits.

here's a good way to ice them besides lying down *cause like, i get up, have a banana and some BCAA's, then go for a run half hour later, come home, shower and eat and its kinda hard to eat oats lying down*

so I get like these compression socks, just hollow flexibile sock things with no ends, and u put the ice pack in there and just roll them up.

works a charm, so you can sit up and eat and stuff and not have to hold the ice to your legs. or lye down

Stretch your calves and take some ibuprofen.
