Shin Pain while running

I'm a heavy guy, and I'm trying to get into better shape. For about a week, I have had pain mid-way up my shins as soon as I start to jog or run. I have been running at the end of long walks, and this pain comes. I've never had this kind of pain before, and I concerned about it. What do you guys think?

Google shin splints and read the forum. Someone asks about this condition every two days.

do you run outdoors or on a treadmill... i used to get shin cramps (not really shin splints) and i seem to get around them by putting the treadmill on a 1.0% incline. I'm sure it has to do something with my lack of running technique

you'd probably want to get you some better running shoes, believe it or not, but it will help.

When I started running again after a significant amount of time off, I was getting shin splints too. I started getting a good warmup and stretching properly and the shin splints went away. Oh yea, make sure you drink plenty of water. Don't stop running, you'll eventually get through it.

If you're running outdoors (as opposed to a treadmill), stay off the pavement whenever possible. It decreases the pounding your shins are taking. It's amazing how much easier grass is on your legs/feet.

Also, as previously stated, a good pair of running shoes makes a lot of difference.

I've read that continuing to run after you have shin splints is the worst thing you can do and it can lead to stress fractures in the tibia.

If you have access to an elliptical trainer or stationary bike do that until your legs heal. If you have flat feet or abnormally high arches, you are more susceptable to shin splints. So it's important to get shoes designed for that kind of foot.

Also, running on grass isn't always better because the ground is more uneven, which causes increased stress on the areas that are injured. Not all paved surfaces are equal. In increasing hardness: running track, asphalt, concrete.

If you have to keep running, ice your shins for about 20 minutes when you're done.

Don't listen to thsi stupid ass..

IF YOU HAVE SHIN SPLINTS LET THEM HEAL before running again.
Also drinking water has nothing to do with Shin Splints.

If you have the opportunity, try using an eliptical machine (0 impact). Otherwise:

Condition your shins (try walking a lot)
Stretch, Warmup
Get new running shoes (invest in a good pair, save your body in the long run)

What I found was best for shin splints is ice massage.

Basically just freeze water in a dixie cup and tear off the top of the cup when frozen and run the ice up and down your shins for about 15 minutes.

My schools trainer had us do that during lunch and after practice and it really helped my shins. I kept running and doing activity with the shin splints and I'm not worse off for it, but it probably slowed the healing process some.

To help prevent future occurances work the muscles of your shins. Shin splints as i understand can occur when your calves become too strong and pull the weaker muscles along your shin away from the bone. Also run on grass rather than sidewalks or artificial surfaces (like tracks and treadmills).

your feet are too flat for running, so good pair of snickkers will help a lot, good luck
