Your overweight, but are you fit

I know overweight people who are fit as.....well...something

I ask because it depends on what level you should start off at in terms of intensity (no matter what, you need a base to work from)

Run for like 20 minutes a day, then add a minute every 1-2 days. Should be a good, general place to start off at

No offense, but this is a really stupid question. There are no benchmarks for things like how much you should run at X lbs overweight, especially since the standards for being "overweight" are so disputed and inconsequential to someones physical fitness that being 50lbs overweight means almost nothing without your height and current fitness level, especially if you are 50lbs "overweight", or 50lbs "overfat", because the standards for BMI and height/weight charts are absolutely nonsensical.

My oppinion about what somebody should do when they are just starting out a fitness program is to begin with 20-30 minutes of aerobic activity, if you can't keep up a steady pace for that long, take walk or jog breaks, and work up to being able to continue at a steady pace for the whole 20-30 minutes, then begin to increase the intensity and duration over as long a period of time as it takes until you can do 45 minutes of continuous aerobic activity. This is just my oppinion, and it may not apply to you since you have not given anything about your fitness level or if your 50lbs are muscle or fat.

do HIIT: sprint for 20 secs, jog for 20 secs, repeat for 5 minutes at the start, and move up...

sprint = 100%

if you're heavy, i'd do 1 mile every other day for a week, then 1 mile every day next week. then 2 miles. etc. start low and add as you see fit.

if you bust your ass running, you'll hurt yourself. i'm in good shape from bjj but running is a completely different wear on your joints.

find your pace, that's what it's there for.

If you're 50lbs overweight and want to lose some weight and are interested in running to do it here's what I would and wouldn't do.

First off, don't do HIIT. Having someone like yourself who is 50lbs overweight (and I'm assuming not doing any cardio or training for sometime) is asking to mess up their knees or get a heart attack by going out to a track and going balls to wall.

If I were you I would start off doing 30-45min of continuous aeorbic work (running, stairstepping, whatever) 3 times a week to begin with. If you can't do 30min take walk breaks but the important thing is to keep moving.

Don't think about how many miles you should be running. Focus more on time.

I don't think you can actually put number on something like that. If you ran 2 miles and it was pretty hard.. keep running 2 miles until it's easier then you know it's time to increase the mileage a little bit or run that same 2 miles a little faster. Be patient.. you'll get to where you want to be.

when i was 50 lbs over my current weight, i would run a certain amount of blocks. On the first time, I did 2 miles. After I ran that same distance 3 times, I will add a block to increase the distance. It worked great for me because I was doing the cardio and it also helped me feel a sense of acheivement. Good luck.
