resting heart rate of 42 beats per minute

I have had to get surgery three times in the past year. Once to remove my tonsils and twice because of a shoulder injury. Everytime I have gone they have given me an ElectroCardioGram and freaked out telling me my heart was abnormal. My resting heart rate is frequently between 38-42 BPM. I am actually a little bit fat and muscular. I am not a marathoner. They checked my heart with ultrasound and its healthy. Apparently its genetic as my dad is like this too. I have been wondering if this is a good thing or bad thing. My doctors seem to think it isn't a problem but they are all Korean and when they hear I do martial arts just think I am in good shape. I am in average shape so this kind of freaks me out.

This is after not excercising for 8 weeks because of an injury. My heart rate was 36-8 when I was in shape but was sick with tonsillitis.

When I was hospitalized a couple of years ago a nurse woke me up and said my resting HR of 40 was going to upset the doctor so she wrote down 50 on the chart. I'm not in particuarly good shape but if you do cardio long enough I think the RHR just works it's way down.

ya, mine drops to 30 sometimes...So I went to a specialist...all he said is that I should be in a text book as the definition of an athlete.

All in all or on the trot (ie multiple 24 mile runs a week).

On a side note but on topic

The slowest heart rate on record is 27 bpm achieved by Martin Brady in August 2005.
So...ummm

Either some people are off on their 6 times table, their equipment was dodgy, they are olympic athletes or genetic freaks
