Replacement Excercises with Shin Splints?

Because of bow legs, I've been getting shin splints periodically for about 10 years, but never so consistantly as I have recently. I've been on a real health kick for the last few months, biking 22 miles a day and running 4-5. I like the amount of excercising I've been doing....I've never felt better physically.....but the recurring shin splints are affecting my running.

With time being a factor, what excercises would you all recommend to replace 4-5 miles a day running?

Running is the big fat burner, and it has always been pretty time efficient....25-35 mins, as compared to 55-60 on the bike. I get sick of doing the same thing for too long, so I don't want to spend an extra hour on the bike to compensate. I was thinking of picking up swimming, as my fitness center has a pool; but I've never been much of a swimmer.

Would anyone happen to know how calorie burning for swimming compares to that of running? I'm not sure if there are exact numbers or anything, but I know that....say...running a mile burns way more calories than biking a mile. If anyone is knowledgable, how far would I have to swim to burn a similar amount of calories? Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks....some of the numbers seem hard to believe, but I was just looking for a rough estimate, so I guess it works.

Plus, with the cost of gas, I've been trying to do stick to one location.

Biking is pretty good given your circumstances.

numerious studies have shown HIIT to be just as effective, if not more, than low pace cardio

I heard running backwards is good to prevent shin splints, but I don't I could run 5 miles backwards. But if you can, give it a try or run a little backwards during your usual run and it might help.
