I think it's a requirement to cover a few yards yeah
The US guys can indeed walk in off the street from what I gather. Remember UK specials number a few hundred at most, US specials there are hundreds in every regiment.

Well, if you guys had read Lone Survivor, you would know that no, you can't go straight from civvy to SEAL (the author thought he could at first, some funny anecdotes to go with that)

just my opinion. i was never a seal but was in recon medic(apples and oranges), and the biggest thing is mental preparation. i've seen some of the best triathletes go in there and drop because they weren't mentally prepared. guys that make it through buds are a different breed of animals. i can't really say that theres anything you can do to get yourself ready. physically, sure-you can be in the greatest shape of your life. being physically fit can only get you there, the rest is all mental. you either have it or don't. the best thing you can do is to believe in yourself and to stay motivated, regardless of how sh!tty the situation is.

Or free at most libraries. It's one of the best books I've read.

If you want to try out for the SEALs then you should prepare yourself mentally as pretty much everyone here has said, you can program your mind to overpower your body. There are a number of techniques to it. If the Drill sergeant tells you that you will be going out doing drills and in the ocean for 48 hours, then just think to yourself "i can do a week", they almost always keep you long after the time they declare (it's just a head f**k). Another tip is to just think about your family and friends, promise them you won't quit, this is the last thing to do because after all you are doing it for yourself.
You also need to get it into your head the sort of things you will be asked to do. Think of the worst thing you could ever eat and try it, you don't want to freeze when you need to eat but won't eat food that's four days old, you mean nothing to them, they only want the best guys out there. Make yourself as uncomfortable as you can when training without causing injury to yourself, try running in wet socks full of sand for a few miles, this will be just a taste of what you have to deal with, in addition to sleep deprivation and dehydration.
I have no experience with the military but i have walked, hiked and camped up my fair share of mountains.

I have similar fitness goals as yourself, minus the amount of swimming. You want to combine strength, endurance, work capacity, and specific skill training in such a way to prepare you for anything SEAL training and combat will throw at you. check out militaryathlete.com for some great ideas.
