Problem

I've been running for about a bit over a month now. At first everything was going really well I was making good gains. by 11/19 I was able to do 3 miles at an 8 min mile pace without having to stop. However since then I've been having a real problem. My calf muscles are tightening up to the point that I end up hobbling along like a cripple. This seems to happen to me after only a mile and by the 1.5-2 mile mark its so bad I cant even run anymore. Ive gotten new shoes, stretched extensively before running, taken aleve everything I can think of and nothing helps.

Its really getting bad my times have decreased and I'm lucky if I can do 1.5 miles without having to stop and stretch my calves out. I remember I used to have a bit of soreness in my calves running and I would gut through it. But I cant think it was this bad unless i became a total pussy in the last week and a half. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might be able to do to help this? I've decided to take the next week off from running and see if its just a rest issue. I run 2-3 miles a day MWF by the way. Also I do a 5x5 workout set MWF. I do squats on all 3 days and also do deadlifts so this might be contributing.

Any information people can give me would be really helpful. I dont think its a hydration issue either I pound water at work everyday before I run at least 1/2 a gallon. My friend who is a runner told me it might be a lack of potassium but I have no idea how to get more of that in my diet I eat 4-5 bannannas a week as is.

Thanks.

So, for the past month you've been running 3 miles on MWF, as well doing a 5x5 on MWF with squats included?

It's no wonder your calves are killing you as you're doing way too much way too often, especially if this is your first time running.

Not to be a dick, but this is one of the worst templates I've ever seen in this forum.

Take 10 days off and do nothing.

That will probably give you enough rest to heal and recooperate.

God help you if you've developed a compartment syndrome though, as that would require surgery.

After you've waited 10 days and done NOTHING, come back and read the stickies in here and in S&P.

Edit: Fuck 10 days, take two entire weeks off...

TS, if you do nothing else with the remainder of your life, please, PLEASE take this man's advice.

And don't squat/deadlift 3x a week anymore. That's a really BAAAD idea.

While your intentions are good, your information is not.

This guy doesn't need to drop the squats or deadlifts, he just needs to learn when and when not to do them.

But seriously, a lifetime is a long time, so 2 weeks isn't going to hurt you. In fact, you'll probably come back stronger after that break.

You've been exercising on a set of legs that are completely and totally overworked. There is no way that you've adapted to this workload yet as you've only been doing it for a short while. Besides, your injuries only reinforce that.

Two weeks off, then come back and start from scratch.
