Opinions on Treadmill...

Hey guys, this is my first post on these awesome forums even though I have spent quite some time just browsing and reading. I was wondering what you guys think of running on the treadmill. Some people say they like to run on soft surfaces like grass because harder surfaces give them shin splints. So, is running on a treadmill often going to be hard on the body. Also, is hopping on the bike a better bet? I just wanted to get your guys overall opinion on treadmill running. Thanks.

Cheers.

I think running on a treadmill is oftentimes easier on your body, they build a lot of give into those treads.

With treadmills you can precisely control your pace, distance and time running and see how many calories you've burned, etc. However there's still something to be said for getting out and seeing if it's raining on any given day.

I'd try to mix it up and not run on the treadmill exclusively, but including it in your regimen is probably a good idea. Check out the elliptical trainer as well for an even more low-impact workout that basically burns as many calories as long distance running.

PS, check out UFC All Access with Rich Franklin and see how that guy uses a treadmill. He bitch slaps it and calls it Gertrude. Seriously, that guy must go through like 3 treadmills a year.

It's not my cup of tea at all. I run around the same park for an hour and a half every night, but I start chewing off my tongue with boredom after 5 minutes of the treadmill. I've also found treadmill running gives me weird cramps and injuries.

If you can hack it then I guess it's a convenient tool to have, but IMO nothing's gonna replace real running. Fresh air, sunshine, chicks and the occasional impromptu sprint session whenever some big ass dog decides you smell nice.

I prefer the bike to the treadmill but running outdoors can't be beat.

Treadmill is a great peice of equipment.. I do feel I get some weird cramps and pains on it vs runing outdoors, but I do like something forcing me to keep my pace.. Plus if you live in the hood like me, running around the block at 10pm isnt always a good option..

I actually love running on the tmill. Some people get bored....but not me...I could do it for hours. Much easier on my joints imo. I have mine programmed for sprints and inclines...I really like the workout. The road is hard on my shins and I don't like running on it if I don't have to. I would prefer a nice trail run.....but I certainly can live with the treadmill.

Can't beat the bike for the legs

You are more prone to turn an ankle running outside. The treadmill is easier on the knees and is not boring if you pop in a movie or some UFC. Depending on the treadmill you may be able to change the elevation to simulate running uphill. You can easily gauge your performance and improvement. A worthy purchase.

Running on the street kills my knees quick so the Treadmill has become my best friend when it comes to running.

Treadmills for me too. Running on the streets gives me knees probs. Have some light weights next to your treadmill so when you're done you can do some lightweight training for muscle endurance or a bag for some punching or kicking.
