Neck question

Hey, I have a question that may be answered here or in S&P, but I'll ask you guys first.

I have some problem with my neck. It is usually brought about through exercises such as dips, chins or military (overhead) press (standing).

Basically it feels musculature and the pain runs from the back of my neck, sometimes all the way down my spine to my middle back. The pain can last anything from one day to two weeks. It feels like the pain centres around 'two cords' running down either side of my spine. The pain will severely hamper my ability to move my head left and right and up and down.

I realise I haven't described it very well, but maybe someone has had something similar.

It is really inhibiting my training because I can't train consistently.

It actually feels as if I have pulled a muscle in my neck, and it happens so frequently, when doing these strength exercises, that my neck may actually be out of alignment.

My question is, who do I see?

I don't really believe in chiropractors and feel that they are charlatans (on account of doctors having little regard for them and people have to frequently do a multitude of return visits). I was thinking of a physiotherapist, but obviously I will have to rehurt my neck (its not too bad at the moment) before I visit.

Any ideas? I'm not sure how I did it, but it may have come from attempting to get out of guillitines some time ago.

Any advice is welcome (apart from 'kill yourself')

well it sounds like you damaged some of the muscles in your neck and/or in your upper back. i go to the chriopracter for this kinda reason so i would say ditch the ego and go to the chriopracter. what will hurt in giving it a try it might work who knows.

i have a very similar nagging pain like you discribe...

if someone puts me in a half / full nelson... or does a neck crank submission on me... the next day I have extreme neck pain in my muscles... i usally just use a heating pad and 'ibueprofen' then the pain goes away in a couple days...

Lately it seems that the pain doesn't last as long.... my pain doesn't go all the way down my back like the kind you discribe but it maybe a similar thing....

i have recently learned of a technique that caropracters sometime's use called MAT (muscle activation techniques) i don't know if its gimick or what but people @ my gym have cured a lot of their nagging injuries this way... thought about trying it...

keep us posted on your progress... good luck!

Check if you have a bulging disk in your neck, a common problem much more serious than a muscle imbalance.
