That's a beautiful thing.

Seriously, there's alot to be said for the mental state that neither rejects or accepts. It's the path to the truth, IMO.

Also, listening to goosebump inspiring music helps.

Oh, and the fear of a deer popping out of nowhere and scaring you to death. THe deer in PA have grown too comfortable, always hanging out a few feet off the path, and you don't notice them until they're five feet away and yell out "oh shit!"

Deer, pah! I live in a city with the highest per capita rate of pitbull and rottweiler ownership - none of them are kept leashed, and they're all called 'Tyson'.

Ive stoped listening to music while running, music during running makes me loose focus, I now prefer to simply focus on the running and getting the breathing right. In through the noose out through the mouth, and finding and keeping a good breathing rythm.
I usually do the Steady pase when its flat but every time theres upphill I go faster and everytimes theres downhill I take it easier.
And when things start to get bad, I either go with the "machine machine machine" (ufc all access with Rich Franklin) or I say to myself "u can rest when your dead" which im not shure where ive picked up. but it has all helped me alot, also the thing about watching either some traning tape or mma fight before running gets me pumped up which also helps alot.
Running in the rain at night when theres no one outside is also one of the best and most enjoyable way of running imo.

Funnily enough within the last 2 weeks I've started saying to myself and others 'you can rest when your dead'

I'll have to +1 the running in the rain

Not to sound all hippy ish but its almost spiritual when your in the zone, no ones about, its quiet except for the rain and your breath. I was out on a run christmas eve last year and I was about 4 minutes into the run and it started to snow quite badly, its was like 8 am and no one was about. Lovely

i ran for the first time the other day when it was hot outside. i live in arizona. i made 1 and 1/2 miles with no rest at a grueling pace. i just ignored the pain.. i didnt realize how tired i was till i got home and kept breathing hard for 20 minutes. even after i got out of my cold shower i was breathing hard. i was drooling as i was running. my goal is also 3 miles

I used to not be able to run 100 yards before. What I did was just set goals and stick to them by any means necessary. I'd lace up my shoes and say "i am not taking these off until i've ran 2 miles today", and then 3, 4, 5, and now my normal routine is 6 miles a day at about 7-7.5MPH.

There's been days where I've planned on running 5, and went for 6 on a whim, and it was disasterous because I was in the mindset to mentally check out after 5. But when I start the run thinking "there's no fucking way in hell i am stopping before I hit 6", then I always find a way to finish.

I also sometimes use the "million dollar" mental trick. I'd think to myself "if someone came up to me right now and offered me a million dollars to finish this run, could i do it?", and then i think "yes, of course, i actually could finish it", and if I could finish it for a million bucks, that means that I could in fact physically do it and I just keep running. The only thing that would prevent me from not getting that million to finish the run would be a total breakdown... total muscle failure... and that's extremely unlikely when you're running. There's been times where I thought I truly was going to break down... but then I'd just mentally snap out of it and keep going.

The shorter runs though.......same thing, but the autopilot only lasts maybe the mid 5 minutes, after that the lactic in my legs kicks in, I'm breathing like a late night caller and I want to die. Even about a minute after I finish I feel like puking
once you get past the first 5 minutes, it gets world's easier in my opinion. i run at the rec center at my university so there's plenty of hot chicks in minimal work-out clothing to keep me motivated and distracted.
