Martial Arts Workouts
Hey,
I'll be going to University this year and I want to stay in shape and maybe compete in some grappling comps. I'll be taking Judo (already have some wrestling and Shotokan experiance) 2 or 3 times a week as well as a "Muay Thai Conditioning" Class my university offers once a week. The class involves warm-up, stretching, cardio conditioning including push-ups, squats, etc., core workout (crunches, planks) and Muay Thai techniques (punching, elbowing, kneeing & kicking). I was wondering what other training I should do? I was thinking something along the lines of this 2 times a week:
5 min treadmill warm-up
Side Crunch (5 reps/side)
Side to Side (5 reps/side)
Roller (10 reps)
Treadmill (3 min. with gradual increase of speed and incline)
Pull-Ups (10 Reps)
Medicine Ball Squats (10 reps)
Decline Push-Ups (10 reps)
Stationary Bike (3 min. in 30 sec. sprint and 30 sec. decreased intensity intervals)
Medicine Ball Push-Ups (5 reps/side)
Is this fine or should I do some weight lifting as well?

Definitley do "some other stuff". Burpees, Lunges, Jumping Jacks, Mountain climbers, Plyometric push ups, plyometric jump squats just to name a few.
There was one more thing, but I cant remember....
Oh yeah, lift weights.

I heard that weight training can slow you down for martial arts.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm a college student and training for a freestyle grappling tournament this November. Under the guidance of my Sensei, here is how I've started training.
Weighed myself mid-afternoon and took a 4-point caliper bodyfat % test.
167 lbs @ 12% bodyfat
Registered for the 165 lbs weight class.
Goal: 165 lbs and 7-8% body fat.
What this means is, to make my body physically optimal, I need to add roughly 5 lbs of lean muscle mass, and then cut 8 lbs of fat.
up to september:
Eat healthy, eat clean, eat a lot.
lift heavy (low reps, high weight), light cardio (15-20 min on workout days)
sept to november:
eat healthy, eat clean, dont eat as much
light lifting (high reps, low weight), heavy cardio (20-30 min daily)
it all comes down to setting goals and designing a plan to meet them.

Weight training will not slow you down if you train correctly. Strength and power workouts will make you, well, stronger and more powerful. Body building workouts can have a negative effect on performance.

You have a lot to learn man...
I'd suggest reading through all the training related forums (S&P, conditioning, diet, etc.) and their respective FAQ threads before you take that class.
To be honest man, your "workout" is really wimpy. I'm not sure how difficult your class is but I can guarantee you if that's all you're doing then you're gonna have a rough time when the instructor puts you on a strength and conditioning circuit.
At least try to work some burpees into your regimen

We'll to tell you the truth I'm just getting into working out and stuff. I have no clue what to do but I'm starting to do a daily dumbbell circuit and running every morning. I'm going to wait to talk to my BJJ (decided to go with BJJ instead of Judo) teacher about what to do once I start my classes.
