Lung capacity

does it make your cardio better or just makes you breathe slower?

it makes your cardio better and it also helps you gain control of your breathing, resulting in an increased stamina/cardio allowing you to keep your pace for quite a while longer than your opponent! hope this helped!

It's also determined mostly genetically, but as you work on your cardio, you will improve your lung capacity.

i used to have a little thing i'd do to help with that.. i'd swim across the pool (the long way) on 1 breath, then i'd exhale and take 1 breath and repeat over and over again.. after doing this for a while i could swim across the pool 3 times on 1 breath. might not help lung capacity but it's improving something!

No. VO2 is the rate at which your muscle cells can absorb oxygen, dictated by how strong your respiratory and cardiopulmonary systems in tandem can pump it.

Increased lung capacity helps cardio. The more you can hold in your lungs, the more oxgen your body has available and the fewer breaths you need to take. The above post is good advice - I'm no expert but I've heard underwater swimming is one of the best ways to build lung capacity.

Back when I was a swimmer I used to manage 3 laps of a 25m pool on the one breath doing under water breast stroke.

I managed 3 miles in about 21 minutes the first time I did a timed run at school and I detested running (/never done it before). Theres something to be said about lung capacity and cardio (which you just reminded me)

This form of training is called "hypoxic swim training." Basically, you limit the breaths you take during swimming (you don't NEED to swim underwater) to build up your respiratory threshold.

4 strokes to every breath for front crawl

I didn't know it was called that though.
Cheers for the input [stores away new piece of information]
