Lower back/calf issues

Ok so I have 2 weird problems that I'm having.

First, I seem to have a problem during certain training segments to have my lower back tighten up very very bad and cramp up to the point of being quite painful even to walk or sit. Could this be attribute to weak abs or something? My lower back is far from weak to be honest so the abs thing is the only thing I can come up with.

Second, and this one you will find humorous. My calves lately have gotten to the point where they tighten up and burn tremendously doing things such as mowing my lawn or walking an extended distance in sandals. It's not really the backs of my calves, but the sides, like parallel to my shinbown and not all the way up either, just about midway. I can feel a physical knot develop on both of them and it feels like burning fire when they are cramping like this.

Any ideas?

I have to agree with hamstrings, I had back surgery little over year ago and after dealing with back issues for a year prior. My hamstrings were so tight for along time and I had always been flexible before

Another vote for stretching. May as well hit the whole posterior chain since it's all connected and tightness has a way of traveling along it. Also, tightness in the hip flexors can contribute to problems in the posterior chain.

Check out the threads on foam rollers and myofascial release.
