It really depends upon the type of injury you suffered. What happened?

got kicked in sparring, moved the kneecap, it gives too much pain to train hardcore again, not enough to not train.

Get into T'ai Chi. Not only will it be damn near the ONLY thing that will preserve your knees THROUGHOUT your life, it will HEAL damaged cartilage (if you have any), and will strengthen supporting muscles and tendons. Additionally, you will find that it will improve any other Martial Arts you practice 10 fold.

Find a local school, sign up for 3 months just to try it and give it a go. After the three months, if you cannot say that you feel much better, stronger, better balanced, with more joint mobility and stability then quit. i have a feeling you'll be hooked though.

If you have insurance then I would go and have it looked at to rule out meniscus damage or possibly ligament damage. I wouldn't feel comfortable telling you what to do unless you know for sure what may or not be wrong with your knee. Time off to heal can end up saving you in the long run. However the exercises that are recommended for rehab for knees, however, are called open chain exercises, which mean lifts like squats, leg presses, cycling and wall squats and holds. Open chain because they involve the joints above and below the knee (hips and ankle) and thus reduce the stress on the knee joint. Finally, I wouldn't blow off cycling b/c that is one of the best exercises for your knees.
