Icon3 Kill/deaden/dull Nerves in foot OR wait a YEAR??!

Went to the Podiatrist yesterday about the sharp pain @ the base and edge of my right pinky toe (5th metatarsal). I thought it was a stress fracture, since it happened while rolling on a harder surface. Hit the floor pretty hard with the edge of my foot.

Anyway, had the X-rays done, even had an MRI done, the doctor says it's not a stress fracture, but it's nerve damage. He told me it could take up to a year or longer for it to heal up all the way. Since he understands that I gots to train, he told me my options are waiting the year or massaging it till it deadens the nerves.

I don't plan on smashing it with sticks till the nerves die, but rolling it sounds with something hard sounds like a good idea. This shit hurts everytime I go down and I have to get rid of the pain.

I already know about the kicking the heavy bag to deaden the nerves, but since it's on the edge of my foot I'd have to do side-kicks all day long... ><

What would you do? If you'd kill off/deaden/dull the nerves, how would you go about doing it? What dangers would there be for having dead nerves on the edge of your foot?

Thanks in advance to everyone who lends their advice, it's greatly appreciated

i wouldn't do anything. Unless your a pro athlete who is making money off your athletic skills it isn't worth it. A year of not training is not worth losing feeling in your foot.

You need those nerves to tell you if that part of your body is hurt.

Thanks for your reply. Well, it wouldn't be the entire foot... I'd just be focusing exactly at the pinpoint spot at the base of the pinky toe. If you look at your foot you can see what I'm talking about. kinda like the knuckle of the foot, right where the edge of the foot terminates and the start of the pinky toe. Ugh.. I suck at describing things.

Anyway, I would think killing the nerves in a spot on my foot about the size of a nickel wouldn't be too dangerous. I mean, I look at my feet whenever I clean them and I'd be pretty sure if anything was broken since I wouldn't be able to wiggle my pinky toe.

I would just toughen the muscle around it, but since it's a "foot knucle" there's not really much to work with..

You'd think it wouldn't hurt this much since it's such a small area of nerve damage, but it hurts everytime I go down.. even on soft mats.

Ask your doc... a nickle area of nerves? Doesnt seem like a problem...

PERSONALLY, I would probably just deaden it with a little research of course.

Yeah, my podiatrist said I could "massage" the area to deaden off the nerves if I wanted to speed the process along rather than waiting a year. Given the fact that doctors aren't the perfect all-knowing creatures they are made out to be, I wanted to get everybody's opinion or even anyone's experience with nerve deadening.

I've already started the process, rolling & tapping it with my dog's rope bone. From the research I've done, it's less damaging if it is at all, to do it with something not at hard as bone or harder. Bone density & harder will just screw up the bone with calcium deposits, stress fractures, and other unwanted-ness.

Thanks all 3 ppl who answered!

Have you considered getting a second-third opinion. I am interested in the outcome of your situation, keep us (me) posted.

White belt invasion!

Me personally, I would just take the year off and let it heal if you aren't competing professionally. I prefer keeping my body in normal operating shape for as long as possible.

I'd say just go with whatever the doctor says is safe and the best solution.

Perhaps see a specialist if you haven't allready?
A normal doctor might have limited knowledge.

Since I started training I've had quite a number of painful toe sprains, but thankfully no nerve damage.
