Today I took part in the Okc marathon relay.
OKC Marathon > Home
I was initially supposed to run the 10k leg but then was later asked to switch to the 12k leg this week. I had never ran a 5k or a 10k ever so this stuff was kind of new to me. I started training about 8 weeks ago although I could/should have trained a little harder in the beginning weeks.
I had been running a few miles then walk for a min or 2 then run some. Finally I reached a point where I could cover 6.2 miles with a combination of running and a little walking. My uncle who helped organize our family had been sick and asked me to run the 12k instead.
It was pretty neat my grandmother(77) was doing the 5k and my cousins daughter (6) was doing the other 5k leg and with my uncle doing the first leg and my dad doing the last.
1st Leg – 10km/6.2 miles
2nd Leg – 5km/3.1 miles
3rd Leg – 12km/7.6 miles
4th Leg – 5km/3.1 miles
5th Leg – 10km/6.2 miles
Some friends of my uncle and my wife formed their own relay team and we paired up on each of the legs except one. I was paired up with a guy that was 51 but not in bad shape and had done a few 10k's before. My leg rolled around and we started out at a nice easy jog to ease into it. I was thinking, if this guys 51, ( Im 29) and can run the whole thing there is no way I am going to bitch out and stop and rest. About 6 miles in I was getting worn out ,but did good, and did not stop to walk at all. I finished my leg in 1hr 8min and some change. About a min of that time was finding your teamate and exchanging ankle bracelets. The actual distance for my section was 7.3 miles due to the way they had the race set up. Some legs were a tad longer, some a little shorter. Aftewards I felt pretty good so I jogged/walked with my father and another friend for the last 10k leg of the race.
I dont know much about races but the event seemed well put together and the volunteers were great handing out water, snacks and food.
Main reason I started the thread was to encourage other sherdoggers to participate in
local races around them. All types of people come together to run, jog, and walk. It is a great way to improve cardio for martial arts and also to encourage family members to join in and improve overall health for the whole family.
