There are many different opinions, and in the end you're probably best just finding what works for you by trial and error. A lot depends on your existing muscle mass and how protective you are of it.

Personally I like about an hour of cycling or aerobic running, I drop fat quickly this way and have never noticed any significant LBM loss provided I maintain my usual lifting routine. Others might prefer HIIT, though I'm not ready for intensity at that time of day, plus it diminishes your ability to work out later on.

I don't want to lose any of my muscle mass, so if I continue my liftin rutine... Will it then be okay to do cardio in the morning?

Speaking from personal experience, yes, it should be fine. But then I hover around a natural weight of 185 no matter what I do (like 90mins of aerobic running straight out of bed), so it might be different for you depending on your body and your goals.

Give it a try. Muscle doesn't fall off overnight, but fat does. If you experience any drawbacks then simply don't continue with it.

Hi. I felt like jumping into this thread.
I am wondering the effect of diet on this equation.
I mean, I am doing boxing 5 days a week, and I haven't been to the gym this week at all (I just felt like recovering, this boxing training is quite strenous).

Now, I am overweight so I have cut down calories and am wondering whether I will lose a lot of muscle because of all the cardio and little (if any) gym work.

Please suggest me how to approach this. I am thinking doing weights two times a week.
The scale will help me calibrate my food, so I don't drop too fast or too slow.

thanks guys.

IMO jogging 2+ miles is good for fat but doesn't help alot for actual fighting shape.

I agree and disagree. It'll make those intervals easier to run and of better quality. When I have a good endurance running base under me, my recovery between intervals is much better. In addition, it's proven that aerobic running increases the capilliaries (small blood vessels) in the body, enabling better ability to carry oxygen.

In my case, I run 6-12 miles daily, as coming from a running background. You better believe that my interval-running is much more advanced versus someone who doesn't take the time to gain 2 mile endurance.

IMO, if far away from a fight and not in serious-training mode, the best thing is to gain running endurance. It'll allow you more intervals and better recovery. Plus, you're body will be minimal in fat composition and ready to go. Remember that distance running doesn't have to be slow. Perform tempo (lively paced) runs and threshold (very hard) runs.
