Intercostal Strain?
I was grappling last Wed. when I felt sudden pain in my left ribs. I didn't think much of it, but the pain has sustained up to this point... hurts to stretch, sit-up, cough, etc. I was in to see a doctor anyways, so I asked about it and he said it's an intercostal muscle strain. He also said it takes around 6 weeks or so to heal.
Is it really that bad... 6 weeks? Should I lay off grappling?

Well, chances are your doctor will know more than anyone (or most) of the people here. Having said that, doctors can be wrong.
Best thing to do, I think anyhow, is just to relax a little, do some light training/cardio and take it one say at a time. If you start feeling better, up the effort, if you still feel alot of pain, chill a little more.
also, Surgarboyae: http://www.sherdog.net/forums/member.php?u=74343 might be able to help ya out. Give him a pm, he was pretty much bang on about my shoulder injury a few weeks ago (more so than my NA dr.).

Damn i have the same thing hurts when u try and get out of bed, doing sit ups even driving sometimes especially after training. Thing is i've had better advice here than at my doctors, i went last week to check it out and he looked as though he didn't have a clue said whatever it is it should pass then said its a chest infection gave me a load of antibiotics and other crap which haven't done a thing so i booked anther appoinment for next week to see another doctor i'll mention what u have and see what they say.

Antibiotics for muscle strain? Unless there's something missing from your post, that's pretty fucked up.
There was some doctor in the Daily Show, he made up a list of symptoms, saw 4 different doctors, and got 3 different diagnosis. One of the doctors was clueless at first (as he should have been, since it was all made up) be ended up telling the guy he needed surgery!
I also had a doctor tell me nothing was wrong with my shoulder, maybe a slight sprain. Turned out I had a partial (very slight) fracture in my collarbone. Fucking dick. If he had gotten me X-rays right away instead of me having to see 3 different doctors over the course of 2 months I could have had it taken care of.
Shitty thing is he makes more in an hour of giving BS advice then I make in a day.

strain
Yeah, I have the same thing on my right side, under my pec. I am 99.9% sure what I have is an Intercostal muscle strain. I did it when I went gung ho back into BJJ and rolled with some guy who was about 230lbs(i'm 175). It hurt that night, hard to breath, couldn't sleep on stomach etc.. Being the fool that I am, I tried again to roll 3 days later and hurt it even more. I guess I just need to take time and let it heal, but dam I hate not being able to get going back into BJJ.
Whoever that Doc was who gave you antibiotics should be shot!!

makes me thankfull I have such a good doctor. Went in for major back pain. First thing he did was ask me questions on my past like any accidents in the last 10 years. Where does it hurt. Had to try and touch my toes ect. He then had me go get a bone scan done and a xray. Also gave me a 8 day supply of Prexige as a free trial kind of thing. Scans came up clean so he perscribed a two month supply of Prexige and told me to come back in a month and a half and if it wasnt fully healed then he sending me to some sort of back specialist to do some "exploritory" work.

Ha ha yeah he should be shot i went back last week saw another doc and he knew what it was straight away said it takes weeks for it to heal said just stay off rolling until the pain is gone. Yeah i find it a right bummer that i can't go until it heals but better let it get better and be 100% again than not be 100% go back and end up worse.
