Icon4 Inquiry: Shoulder Injury

Heya, all. I am 20 years old, live in the state of New York and have been sitting on not one, but TWO dislocating shoulders for about the past year. I have been training for many years, dabbling in various arts ranging from Shinto Ryu Karate, Kyokushin Karate, Wing Tsun, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, BJJ and a few others. I originally injured my shoulders at different times, both during BJJ training. Surgery at this point is an inevitability considering the frequency at which they dislocate. I've tried to stay diligent in my training just accepting the occaisonal dislocation as a given, popping it back into place myself and getting back on the mat.

I was curious as to whether or not anyone on here has had a similar situation, and how they modified their training or if they continued their training at all. I was similarly wondering if anyone who HAD gone through any kind of injury requiring surgery could offer me any insight to the effect of good orthopedic surgeons in the state of New York. I'm still very up in the air as to who I trust to cut me open. I'd prefer someone who specilizes in either sports medicine, shoulders specifically or both.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, ladies and fella's.
Keep on keepin' on.

Ivan

Do you do any prehab/corrective exercises for your shoulders? There's a wealth of information out there on protecting the shoulder girdle with specific strength and flexibility work.

little late for prehab exercises if he's suffering dislocations all the time. surgery is the only way to fix it. i have a shoulder issue as well (mine subluxates). it fucking sucks. i would get surgery too but i dont have insurance. get it done now while you have insurance, you don't know when you might lose it.

All the advice so far is much appreciated. Just scheduled a visit to an orthopedic surgeon, but am still very open to suggestions as far as training modification and superior surgeons go.

Thanks again, guys.
