Have you tried stair sprints? They are good addition to hill routines.

i made it, peoples.
keep in mind my breakfast was 3 sushi rolls left over from last night's v-day cheat. then i took my girl home, we stopped at my favorite little pseudo-organic atmosphere, hippy, coffe shop. i scored some garbage baked good item and a big shake consisting of espresso, ice cream, chocolate, and milk. the shit was good.
i get home 2 hours later and still full (honestly, i am still full from last night). so... i prep my shake, take some creatine, ba, and ECA.
i sip the shake a tiny bit and get dressed.
it took 9min of a light jog from my place to the trail, then down the trail to the hill (9m total). about 1m from the hill, i start to walk and relax back up. all the time i'm relaxing to the soothing sounds of mr jack johnson's new album on my mp3. (8/10 if you're in a good mood)
i do the full stretch with a bunch of lunging shit and etc. feeling good. tight and loose at the same time in a good way--no lingering joint bumps nor bruises.
i warm back up with some mschatz-homoerotic butt-kickers, high-knees, and etc, then swap my music to my rage against the machine play list.
i don't have a good sports timer, i was being a little slick and using my mp3 to keep some sort of tabs on my work/rest efforts.
30s sprint up the hill, 90s jog down the other side
repeat... 10 times total.
half way through, i hit some sort of second wind and felt awesome, beastly, monster, etc. firing up that hill felt like throwing knees on thai pads when your partner is holding perfectly.
i had no problems keeping intensity, but i did at 1 minute rest between sprint 8 and 9 because fatigue made sprint 8 finish more like a run than a "pitbull on my heels" sprint or "killer bees behind me" sprint.
next time (thinking bi-weekly), i will possibly do 20 sprints seeing how i recover from this session in the coming days. i'll add a ~5m rest after sprint 10 though.
note to self: wear cleats. i didn't slip (rain last night) but it took a little concentration away from the task at hand to focus on setting my feet on solid ground.
after sprint 10, i walked down the hill to the tail, then jogged home at a good pace. flat running is so easy after hill sprints. jesus. it's like walking out 405 then squatting 315.
PS. please don't tell S&P. i'll tell them when i'm ready. now is not the right time. it's too soon.

stairs get a 9/10 on the cardio tool score because they're fucking beastly, BUT they're usually hard and solid (IE concrete) and I get shin splints at the drop of a hat. oh, and i have a hill >1mi from me where i'd have to drive to some place to trespass to use some stairs.
i'm getting my old shin splints back and the only impact i've been taking is jump rope on a SOFT wrestling mat (not stiff at all). i think it might be in relation to my bones (tibia) rather than the muscles though because i feel it on the medial part of my tibia where there is barely any muscle anyways. another factor is from the knee down, i have barely any muscle so hopefully hill sprints might leave to greater bone density (plus weight training) and muscle development. if not, i'll just follow that awesome diesel crew youtube video of how to combat shin splints.
so, i'll be cutting jump rope down a little, working sprints w and w/o hills, and using a lot more resistance bike. hopefully i can add in some swimming when it's warm and be covered without destroying my tibias.

but it's homo-erotic indeed. i had mud all up my back from the butt-kickers and sprinting. looked like i sat myself during a gay porn or something. heh.
i was about to do the karaoke or w/e thing and i was like fuck it. no need to look like an ass AND take myself out trying to do that on the uneven grassy hill with which i had to work.
