Helps decrease inflamation and flush out waste product built up in the muscles. I had a friend who was trying out for the olympic bobsled team a few years ago and he said the first couple days he could barely move he was so stiff and sore the morning after training. He asked some other guys how they were moving normally and with no obvious pain right away in the morning? they said they took an ice bath for 10-15 minutes after training. He tried it and said it was amazing the difference was and that was the only thing he did different.
The alternating heat and ice or hot and cold is what I suggested to people I trained with injuries. start with heat then stretch out and ice in stretched postion if possible alternating 15 min heat then stretch and ice for 10 min.
Stretching out really well after working out is very beneficial for keeping soreness down as well and would make quite a difference combined with cryotherapy/cold therapy.

I've read a little on hot/cold plunges. I used to be a strength and conditioning coach and the owner of the gym I worked at swore by these. When submerged in cold water your blood rushes to your core to keep your organs warm. When submerged in hot water your blood rushes to your extremeties. Supposed to have positive affects on the ****bolism.

I don't have a scientific source to document these benefits at the moment.

Man, I'm always about trying new things to improve my recovery time. But THIS SHIT is insane....yesterday my ass goes through the cool down process, and I'm thiking about this thread, so I load a galvenized washbin with ice and hop my ass in for a few minutes....Seriously, I think a polar bears nutsack would shoot up into his body doing this, nevermind the violent reaction my body had. LOL. I Do however feel alot less stiff today though, just having trouble convincing my Johnson to come back out. It's traumatized. ahahah.

Give er a shot after a good days workout, you'll see ahaha. This is as much about mental toughness as physical recovery. Your body won't want to stay submerged, and forcing it to is a bitch.

I tried this after a workout last week and agree 100%. It might have worked to an extent, but I think I prefer the DOMs to doing it.

i just got home from an intense run, drank my shake, jumped in a hot shower for a couple minutes, then sat in a cold tub for 10 minutes... thats the way i do it and i know that it definitely helps my legs feel less stiff and sore
