ice hockey

i have two questions:

1st - im 6'1 about 160 lbs and ive been playin hockey for about 6 years. i dont know if i should be gaining weight or just stay withthe weight i am now. i think if i gained weight i would be a better checker but i would be slower. so should i gain weight or not?

2nd - what would be some good exercises to get my shot faster and improve my skating speed?

thanks in advance

hj

1.) If I were you, I would gain some weight. Gaining weight does not = skating slower, unless you go about it wrong.

2.) For increasing shot speed: full-contact twists, russian twists, rows, push press. There are many more because taking a shot uses most of your body (alot of it comes from your legs, but I'll do that next)

For increasing skating speed: unilateral movements (lunges, split squats, step-ups, etc.), squats, sprints, deadlifts, glute-ham raises.

EDIT: Most of it comes from technique, so focus on that.

btw, I've been playing for 12 years.

You're still really young. You'll probably fill out as you get older. Just eat well and play hard.

By training legs you will likely gain more weight just by th sheer fact that your legs are more dense with muscle. Tricep and forearm (bar/rope/weight) exercises will absolutely help with your shot in addition to the core training someone else mentioned. Truth be told, when I was 14 I was seriously 5'8" and maybe 120lbs playing varsity hockey. I always wanted to gain weight but it wasn't until puberty was complete when I was able to really gain, no matter how much lifting and gainer's fuels I was stupidly drinking at the time. You already have quite a bit of size for a 14yr old and you shouldn't worry so much.
