I want to get in shape
I want to get in shape. I guess the main purpose of this thread is to declare my intentions in order for added incentive to stick with it. Any suggestions and advice is more than welcome. But, that's my biggest problem is staying motivated. One way I've been trying to create an incentive to stay motivated is by declaring it to all my friends, family, and now Sherdog, so if I dont stick with it I look like a slacker loser. Any ideas about staying motivated will also be helpful.
About me, I'm 29 years old, 5'7" and weigh about 200 pounds. About 5 years ago when I was single, I lifted 3 or 4 times a week and ran at least 2 miles 3 times a week. I was a lean muscular 155 pounds. However once I became involved with my wife I began to gain weight and once we got married I really began to pack it on. I guess the once the pressure of hooking up with girls in the club was gone, my dedication to staying fit was also gone. I started lifting weights about 9 years ago and even since I got married that's the only thing I've kinda kept up with if you could call it that. I get going really good lifting for a month or two and then I stop doing it for a few months. I've been going through that cycle for a while now. I just really want to stay motivated. I went jogging recently and did a mile in about 15 minutes .
My plan, or goal, to get in shape is to lift S&P style twice a week, add some cardio (at least a 30 minute run 3 times a week) and improving my diet. As far as diet goes, I'm just planning on focusing on portion control and more meals a day. Right now, I'm focusing on cutting out desserts and cokes. I'm really just wanting to get the physical aspect in place first because then my diet usually falls into place due to the guilt factor of that candy bar wiping out the work of the run.
I've thought about posting a before picture but am very apprehensive for obvious reasons. But, this forum is also obviously a lot different than the heavyweights, P&M, or the OT.

the only was ur gonna stick with it is self motivation. It's all about life changes, changes in ur daily routine and ur diet. Get up ealier and go running, set up a scheduale for lifting/cardio. Start to change wut u eat and how many times u eat. For myself, everything is set to a scheduale, for everyday of the week. I was in the same spot u were a couple of years ago so if u need to chat or questions or just wanna shoot the shit get ahold of me. naazzvera2u on aim

Okay.
Fitness is a very relative term. Fit for what ? What are you training for ? That is the real question which needs to be answered.
Aryou looking at training in martial arts ? If so, which one ?
If not I suggest the following:
1. Lift heavy twice per week. Compound movents with free weights. That means Bench Press, Squats, Deadlifts, One arm Dumbell Clean and Press. No isolation movements and no machines.
2. Start off with some light running and eventually work you way up to Hill Sprints. Conditiong does not require a complicated plan or undiscovered exercises. Find a steep hill and try to sprint up it 10 times. QUickly as you can. You will see what I mean...

The schedule thing sounds good. I'm a routine oriented person, if it's not part of a routine I probably wont do it.
I forgot to mention in my original post that ever since I've gained weight that I;ve had very bad acid reflux. Without prescription medication I was waking up choking on my own vomit regularly and even with the medication I have to sleep with Tums next to my bed. This is probably the one of if not the most important reason for me wanting to get in shape.
Another wake up call was that when I was gaining I used to joke with my wife that my goal was to hit 200 pounds and now that I did it really freaked me out.
Also, I live in Rio Rancho NM which is a suburb of Albuquerque. Greg Jackson just opened up a satellite location here in Rio Rancho. I talked to the guy yesterday and I'm planning on going next week. They only charge $85 a month or $10 each time you go in. I figured this would be another motivating factor since I've been wanting to train for a long time but it's just been too far to his gym or out of the budget.
