i just started submission wresling

I¨m loving it! And I have a few questions =)

- I gas really bad after like 5-10minutes of sparring, I really need to get my condition up! What would you recommend doing besided just grappling?

- I have had twice a bad headache at the end of the training, what gives? I did some researching allready and it could be creatine or "your neck isnt accustumed to wresling yet". Your opinions?

Keep training and you won't gas as badly. Try to use technique, not strength - this is hard at first, but keep thinking about it while you're grappling and you should get it. Outside of submission wrestling, work on muscular endurance and anaerobic conditioning.

The headaches may be due to dehydration?

Just rolling is really abou the best thing you can do to get your gas tank up. Other cardio work helps but i know a couple of guys that can run forever and gas faster than I do. and I get tanked after a couple of miles running, go figure. Being able to relax also helps with your endurance. If your all tight and amped up you dump a lot of energy and don't realize it. Try to settle down and relax a bit, comes with experience and being comfortable with what your doing.

As for the headaches. I get them also. I attribute them to just going all out and being that tired. Getting your pulse and blood pressure up really high will give you a headache. Don't know about the creatine thing or anyhting but as I have gotten into better shape the headaches have subsided. Also getting choked out a lot also can make headaches kick in like a bitch. Kinda goes with the territory.

Edit:
Opps forgot about the dehydration thing also. That will defineitly give you a raging headache.

I have allways a water bottle with me at training and I drink but I guess not enough =(

I guess I´m too tense when training. Got any tips how to relax when sparring?

BREATH

If you're in a dominated position, try to steady your breathing and move. You can't lay under his 1/2 guard, get crossfaced all day, and expect to have tons of energy left. Move or shift your opponent's weight off your chest.

As soon as your opponent passes you guard for instance, you have to shrimp to keep him from flattening you out and putting all that weight on your chest.

Then you'll be able to breath easier, and you'll have more gas left in the tank.

Hydrate before you train. Hydrating isn't just drinking while your working out. By that time a lot of the water has already left your system and it takes time ot get back in. Keep yourself hydrated during the day before you work out.

Relaxing really comes with just being comfortable with what your doing and the environment. Getting to know your partners also really helps. One thing besides just experience that helped me relax was picking a certain move or escape to really concentrate on and work. Since I had an idea of what I wanted to do I didn't hit the mat and get all frantic about what I was trying.

Like right now my guard break sucks. So I go in and start out in their guard every time. if I manage to get out of it. I will work side control for a bit for simple stuff like a kimura or cross side armbar and let them pull me back into guard. I don't get all squirrley and try for 5 diferent armbars or chokes and get reversed in the process becuase I'm spassing all over the place. I'm not real concerned yet about tapping other people . Until I can get my defenese down pretty solid. Basically have somewhat of a plan when you hit the mat. It really helps keep you focused and incontrol. And like the other poster said. Breathe. One trick I've picked up from some people also is pay attention to "their" breathing also. A lot of people will take a deep breath and hold it just before they try something. Just a tip.

For grappling doing burpees or running sprints have helped improve my cardio a hell of a lot more than distance running.

Do light weight lifting w/reps of a 80-100 for your upper body. Bi's/Tri's/Military Presses/Good old push ups or butterflies(lateral dumbell lifts for your pecs)/Wings(bend over w/you back straight and closest to the ground and use a barbell w/a weights your comfortable w/. Do it non-stop w/minimal resting between each workout. This will increase your muscle endurance, grappling strength and burns alot of fat. Also learn how to conserve your strength and rely on your weight over using your strength when you have the chance.

Update:

I drank a glass of water every half an hour for few hours before training and drank some more in training and didnt have any headaches.

For the gassing, I tried to relax and it worked! I had guy in my guard and focused on defending and keeping him from laying on me and it worked nicely. He gassed so badly after a few minutes and I easily transitioned to a mount

I noticed that when I tried to save my energy and not go all over the place for subs I managed to control and tap nearly everyone my size but I was easily outmuscled by bigger guys.

I´m around 165lbs and when fighting guys that are 220lbs I was in big troubles. When I had them in my guard they passed easily but when I was in their guard I couldnt pass, infact I wasnt even close! I should be happy though that they didnt submit me though.
