Either way, one should get no more than 7-8 hours sleep. I can function on 6, but I don't like it.

I was making a comment. He made it sound as though he was too busy working out and that he could not possibly get 8 hours of sleep because of that.

If I sleep for longer than 7-8 hours, there's no chance I will be able to go to sleep at the same time the next day.
If I fall asleep at 11pm and wake up at 6-7am, I can fall asleep 11pm next night. If it's 11pm-8am I won't be able to sleep till way past midnight.
But it doesn't work vice versa, if I only sleep for 4-5 hours I feel like shit the whole day and it'll knock me out for an hour or so in the noon, but I won't be able to sleep before the time I slept the day before.
If I don't pay attention to it, eg when on vacation, I'll have a horrible jet lag. The only solution is "overtaking". I need to go to sleep a few hours later everyday until I overtook a whole day,

I probably avergae around 5-6 hours actual sleep and 7 hours per night in bed plus at least one hour "napping" time late afternoon.
The amount of sleep I get seems to bear little resembalance to my actual energy (mental and physical) the next day but if I get short on sleep for an extended period it does really f me up.
I do notice my recovery is faster if i sleep and rest well, this is also linked to stress/tension. If I relaxed aI sleep better, and my muscles feel less tight ..hardly suprising.
Id like more sleep, i just dont get it.

I've gone from getting only 4-5 hours per night(at our old home) to getting a good solid 7-8 hours per night in our new place? How?
1. My wife comes from a family where people watch TV in their bedrooms so for the longest time we had one in our bedroom. The problem is you get used to having to watch TV in order to get to sleep. About a year ago, the tv in the bedroom crapped out and we never got a new one. It was actually quite difficult to get to sleep without it, gradually we found ourselves watching TV in the living room later and later until we fell asleep, then we'd get up and go to bed but would still have difficulties getting to sleep.
In the new house we started over. TV in the living room, nothing in the bedroom, no more sleeping on the couch.
2. Our old place was a basement suite, new place is a second floor condo. So this summer was a lot warmer for us at home, hence I found myself NOT drinking any coffee in the afternoon/night at home. Now I'm just used to not having any after noon.
3. No food 3 hours before bed. I do this more because of acid reflux but I've found I sleep much better this way.
4. Finally, we sprung for a new mattress when we moved. A pillow top mattress. It's like sleeping on a cloud.
