how fit is fit

how far would you say you have to run at say a medium to fast pace to consider you were fit

The human variable is way too large to place a single value on fitness.
There are 6.6 billion people in the world and there are probably 6.6 billion definitions of "fit" as well.

For instance, that fatfuck Jared from the Subway commercials probably thinks he's fit. Where's a sniper when you need one?

How fast is a medium pace? Why running? Running is tougher for some people than others. I could wrestle longer than anybody on the track team at my school but couldn't run half as fast or far as them...who's in better shape? I dunno how to answer your question. Just workout.

You'll need to be more specific. Pick a distance then compare times or pick a time and check distance.

Here's 2 data points from physical professions not student track athletes running (running specialist) that may give you an idea:

FBI PFT 1.5 mile run
Max points at 9 minutes (99th percentile on the Cooper's Norm for LE)
Min points (1 point, yes you can have a negative score) at 12:15 minutes (85th percentile on the Cooper's Norm for LE)

USMC 3 mile run
Max points at 18 minutes
50% points at 26:20 minutes

The FBI wants you to run 1.5 miles in 9 minutes?

I had to do it in 10:45 for the Royal Marines, and I done it in 10:00.

And i'm a pretty fit guy, why exactly does the FBI see the need to have it's "Employees" run this quick?

Merk: As part of the PFT, the FBI requires you to make the run in <12:24 (gets you 1 point). <9min is max points (10) for the 1.5mile run. 1 point is required for each of 4 tests and minimum of 12 points for all 4 tests combined. If you evenly distributed the points across the tests (3point/event) you would need 43 sit-ups, 40 push-ups, a 300meter sprint in 49 seconds and the 1.5mile run in <11:34.

As for "why" they require that, you'd have to ask them. However the testing protocols are taken from the Cooper Institute studies. These reflect some level of overall fitness to be able to perform the various physical tasks related to law enforcement (pursuing suspects, affecting an arrest on a non-compliant suspect, general health of the agent/officer,...). I believe the 1.5 mile run can be roughly equated to a certain VO2max giving and indication of cardio vascular fitness. You can check out the Cooper Institute website (LE section) for more description.
