How does cutting weight sometimes mean less of a gas tank?

When Alistair Overeem use to fight at 205lb he had a bad gas tank and now that isn't the case. Is it because he dehydrated so much or what? I thought in general the less you weigh the better your gas tank would be compared to a heavier person.

Hmm... never really thought too deeply about it.

In my case, I would starve to cut weight. Come competition time, my body was too weak and malnourished to perform at its peak.

most people gas because 1. they try to cut too much weight on the last day.

instead of slowly reducing until the last day they starve

2. they don't know how to rehydrate properly.

they binge, drink far too much. you have to slowly rehydrate

A 2% decrease in weight loss via fluid loss (i.e sweat) can lead to a significant decrease in athletic ability (I'm not sure of the exact percentage loss with regards to athletic ability, but it is large).

According to Berardi, 2% decrease in weight loss via fluid loss is = to 10% loss in cardiovascular ability

I feel at my best when I eat as much as I want whenever I want. When I try to cut some weight, I feel generally fatigued about a week into the process.

Don't forget that sometimes fighters are trying to make a weight class they just really shouldn't be. Guys that should probably fight at 170 trying to make 155 for example. So in order to do that, they have to cut calories so much during training camp that they can't train with the intensity that they really need to. So than, they go in to a fight less powerful and with less cardio than if they just tried to fight in the next higher weight class. That's usually compounded by a large weight cut.

That's why fighters have to find the right weight class. I mean, I could probably get down to 170 rather than 185, but to do so I owuld have to sacrifice a lot of muscle and starve myself to get there, so I'd probably be slower and have poor cardio.

if you cut by not getting anywhere near enough calories and then sweating out another 7-10lbs then it would definitely effect your endurance. some people cut right though and dont get affected by cutting.
