Heart Rate
I'd like to consider myself in ok shape. I run mountains and workout 5 days a week with a 2 day rest period. I went to a fight and the first round i was tense; my body was so tight and i couldnt think. i found till the end of the match but i got sub'd but the problem was i couldnt think. i rewatched the fight since it was recorded and honestly i didnt remember WHAT happened - i just fought.
the problem was my heart rate was super high. i wouldnt say i was gassed because after the fight, like, as soon as i left the cage. i was fine, running around telling jokes etc. was it adrinaline that was giving me problems? first round jitters? how do you over come that? the nerves that came over me was like nothing i felt before..usually im cool and can think but this time i was like a rock and only responded to my coaches voice

do a couple bjj tournaments. Since those usually have couple matches a tournament you will get more use to fighting and wont get as nervous with time.

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe a GSP is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

agreed, grappling tournaments, you get multiple matches, low impact... good way to get used to competing.

Do you have a heart rate monitor? First thing to do is take your heart rate and determine your resting heart rate. When you provide that, I can help you.

Say he has a resting heart rate of 48.
What would you do.

Well with a RHR of 48 I doubt his aerobic system was the problem. There are many variables that could have affected him such as sleep, how much weight he cut, what his nutrition looks like, how developed his anaerobic capacity is, etc.

I also downloaded a handy little program that has all of the HR equations on it where you put in variations like age, weight, resting HR and some other bits and it spits out % ranges as well as times to train under.
I was asking him though what he would do

Learning how to use that handy program and how to apply those number to improve ones performance would be a great place to start.
A good heart rate monitor training book that has great review on Amazon is;
Amazon.com: Heart Monitor Training : John L., Jr. Parker: Books
You probably know most of this already but I'm sure this book can help everyone improve their performance level. It turned my whole game around. The poster who said more comps was spot on as well. Seem like his nerves got the best of him. A training program geared at improving his heart also would help booster his confidence.
edit for book
