GPS is splendid.

Garmin GMAP 60CSx Handheld: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

In previous eras, I would have had to remember my way when I go out running, lest I become lost, harried by wolves and eventually freeze to death, scared and alone whilst trying to construct a crude shelter from twigs and leaves.

But now we've got geosynchronous satellites to do the work our brains used to struggle with. Fuck remembering shit. Just run, and let technology guide you home at the end of the day. Come spring I reckon I'll be taking my new gizmo out into the wilds for some serious derivé. It's even got topographical maps and stuff, so you can survey your local mountain range and program some challenging routes.

A truly awesome toy if you can foot the bill.

You wont be able to figure out how to use that thing if you're having trouble remembering where you were 2 minutes ago.

Nonsense. There are buttons and dials and things. Nothing can possibly go wrong.

Yeah it's got a massive battery, being designed for lengthy expeditions down the Amazon and the like. I plan to go less far afield though, just doing some hiking and half-day runs through national parks. Beats doing the usual roadwork eh.

I was thinking of getting a forerunner, but as far as I could tell it's not a real-time map tool like you get with in-car satnav systems - it just provides feedback on your speed and route and stuff, which you can overlay to a map only on a computer.

This handheld satnav works just like car models, and it's got elevation, weather readings, ordnance survey data, etc. It means the ability to get off the beaten track and just go wherever the hell you want, which is very cool and worth the pricetag IMO.

I have a forerunner 305. Excellent for on the wrist data fo short runs.

That thing looks cool for hiking and what not.

Size?
Would it be like running with a water bottle?
