Going to run my first 5k in May 2009!
First off I just want to say thanks to all the folks here who take the time to post, while I lurk in the conditioning forum alot a barely ever post and I just want you guys to know that I appreciate everything you post.
Now back on topic, I will be running my first ever 5k charity run in May 2009 and am hoping to use information gathered off this site to help me accomplish it. I have never run a 5k and never really ran much of anything before in my life. I recently started doing some running at the gym and have slowly progressed from running at a 6.0 to a 8.0 (dont ask me what the hell those numbers mean, all i know is I get the thing moving faster lol)
Anywho I am going to hit up the FAQ for some info on training my cardio, and if anyone knows any great sites that one could use as motivation or advice please feel more than free to add them.
Questions and comments are welcome as well

On most treadmills the number represents miles per hour. So you started at 6 mph and now run at 8 mph. That translates to starting with a 10 minute mile and currently running a 7:30 mile.

The ones at my gym are km/h which is a bit silly IMO.
That said though, I don't use them so not really fussed.
Nihilistic- get yourself outside running. Unless you're overweight it is much better for you and more applicable to doing a outside 5k.
Is it around a park or is it on pavement?

good luck dude. I found running outside more entertaining and physically demanding than the treadmill, try it if you are not worried about joint problems (though there is always grass)

All the best dude and like Ian says hit the road if you can (if your knees/ankles aren't fucked), you'll find that your times will slow down on the road compared to the treadmill but that's totally natural due to the tougher conditions. Good luck.

Oh and if you are worried about being able to compete the distance then just progress up to it. In other words, run 2 miles, then 3, then 4 etc... until you build up endurance in your legs, take your eye off the clock and just concentrate on completing the distance rather than worrying about your time, that comes later. 5k is just over 3 miles so it shouldn't be too hard for you to achieve.

Don't run the same speed all the time. Run fartlek sessions at least once or twice per week to build speed and strength.
And listen to your body. Pay attention to recovery, and don't try to run through injuries.
Cheers.

5k's are a fucking blast. I'd encourage you, TS, to do one sooner than June of next year. They're short 3.2 miles. Even if you walk the whole thing it's like 45 minutes, and people will cheer for you. It doesn't matter if you come in first, last or anything in between. Runners are a positive community. You'll get free bagels and bananas at the end. You'll get a race number just like Olympians, and most likely a T-shirt. There will be lots of athletic chicks in very little clothing. Congratulations on entering your first race.
