God awful shin splints..

I've been trying to add running on my non-training days on top of my weight lifting to help with my conditioning, so I ran for 5 minutes on the treadmill on Tuesday. Wednesday, and even a bit today, I can barely walk my shins hurt so badly. I went to MT and BJJ last night and some of the drills I just had to completely sit out on because I could barely support my weight on my shins. They hurt to the touch right above the ankle area on the inside of the leg. Is there something I can do to help these along, or fix them all together? Every time I run I can barely stand the next day.

ice

rest

compression

elevation

NEW SHOES!

run on grass, not concrete

walk backwards on cooldowns

swim or bike instead of running for awhile to let your shins heal

there are a bunch of strengthening excercises that may or may not help...check em out on youtube.

good luck

Take a look at this video. It shows how to condition the lower leg to avoid shin splinters. The man who presents it is very knowledgeble. Some times you can't understand what he is saying, but the video makes up for it.

Stay off of them. Ice them. Rest. Use very thin shoes and try to avoid hard surfaces.

I get shin splints from over pronation, which is caused by slightly flat feet. Check out your footprint, if the arch bit is mostly touching the floor you need special running shoes.

'Motion control shoes, or high stability shoes with firm midsoles and control features that reduce the degree of pronation. Stay away from highly cushioned, highly curved shoes, which lack stability features'
