Could be the shoes, but it sounds like Chronic Compartment Syndrome, which during exercise, one of the compartments of muscles in your lower leg swells up and compresses the blood vessels and nerves going to your foot. If it gets worse or if the shoe change doesn't help, find a new cardio activity and consult a doctor.

Holy hell, that would suck!

Thanks for pointing this out. Compartment syndrome is nothing to eff around with.

No. It only happens when running, and I have never had any issues before. I really think it's the shoes, but I will pay attention.

FWIW, no DVT signs or anything like that (leg getting hot, pain, swelling). It's just the left foot going numb, and it goes away almost immediately after I stop running (during the cool-down walk it pretty much resolves).

Your feet were made to run on. Your precious feet don't need tight shoes anymore than your hands need gloves.

Yeah, mine do. I'm aware of the barefoot running phenomenon, but I'm also aware that the vast body of evidence says to go get a good pair of running shoes. I'm going with the vast body of evidence.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Loosening the forefoot and midfoot on the left shoe did the trick. As an added bonus, not only did my foot not fall asleep, but I ran 30 minutes without stopping to walk for the first time in over 10 years today.

Thanks again.

.....or not. The last 2 times out, it has returned. Lacing the shoe looser in the midfoot and at the top or looser in the midfoot and tighter at the top has no effect. It's just happening. I'm suspecting activity-related compartment syndrome, because it seems to coincide with my left achilles tendon getting inflamed. I'm going to check on a new pair of shoes to see if it might be biomechanical, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to see an orthopedist.

It is really irritating, because I'm FINALLY starting to actually enjoy running, and now this.
