Feeling ill after an intense cardio workout.

Can someone please answer this question for me?

What is the cause of feeling sick (vomiting) during or after an intense cardio workout where you exert all of your energy? And how do you prevent it or avoid it? I'm a male, 6'0, weigh ~180lbs, and have average body fat (~15%) for my age group 18-24. Is this something I should be worried about and see a doctor, or is it quite common?

let me take a wild uneducated guess and when the gurus come maybe i get a prize. im guessing its the release of endorphines or some chemical in the brain that are sometimes associated with cardio training or high rep strength training. now if you dont have much practice or your pushing it to the edge maybe its the overload of endorphines or chemicals in the brain that will send you to your knees if you dont stop on your own. i think this sorta reaction is normal. at least for me and others ive heard from. i wouldnt go to ballz to the wall to start with but eventually if your training hard youll get that o fuck im gonna vomit feeling.

I get that same feeling as well. I usually drink lots of water when feel like I'm going to yak....works all the time.

If you keep training your cardio, does your resistance or tolerance to this build up and it eventually goes away? Or do athletes experience this all the time? In other words, is this a sign of poor cardio vascular endurance? At the moment, this is a serious impediment to my training, as I feel nauseacious and can't continue until I recover which ussually takes about 10 minutes.

Assuming you're a beginner, it should go away fairly quickly. Your body just needs to adapt to the stress of exercise (esp. with running), and after two or three heavy cardio sessions you'll be fine. That said, puking is always something of a danger when going all-out, no matter how hardcore you are: check out the regular scenes of up-chuck in TUF.

There are a few things that could be going on. My first impression is that you are working out too hard. Slow down....work yourself up to good cardio. You aren't doing your body any good if you are working out so hard that you puke all the time. I know it's the macho thing to do, but there is nothing wrong with gradually working up to a hard workout.

Another thing that comes to mind....fuel. Are you eating enough and drinking enough? When I push myself during a competition or a very hard workout...I must eat during it. Nuts, raisins, granola......."trail mix" stuff. Maybe you need to do that as well. Or....eat better before the workout.

Thanks for all the advice. Working out on an empty stomach may have something to do with it (I always assumed that having eaten and then excercising is what caused the upheavel in my stomach). I have never actually vomitted, I only experience feeling severely nauseacious to the point I just have to take a break or I would likely vomit if I continued.

try eating maybe something small like a banana or yogurt an hour or 2 before.keep drinking fluids also.

I use to feel sick when i started doing BJJ after going hard with some of the guys. I use to have to take a short break every 30min or so because i'd feel a little dizzy/nausea. When i feel this way i take a quick 2-3min break, sip on some water and i'd be fine for a little while. It's been over two months now and I dont feel it at all any more. My body is getting use to the stress and i'm more relaxed now that i learned more techniques. My advice is dont push it too far, if you get dizzy or feel like throwing up then take a quick break, sip some water, get your breathing back and if you have a good partner ease into intensity. That's what worked for me
