Walking might actually be more worthwhile than you think, especially if you keep up the speed. It's a less efficient way of moving than running (which exercise-wise is a good thing), builds endurance and will certainly help toughen the lower legs against shin splints (which you shouldn't have anyway because you should wear pimp shoes like Asics and RUN ON GRASS). So IMO, walking combined with HIIT and maybe the occasional mid-distance run should see your cardio develop nicely.
