Excercise bikes...

Is biking a good overall all-body workout? I have an excercise bike that i'm gonna start riding cause i'm starting to get some love handles and I wanna know if that would maybe help me with them. By the way the bike lets me know how many calories I'm burning as i'm riding, what would be the best amount to burn overall as far as riding is concerned?

Its a good low impact cardio workout but you should use a heavy bag as well or something to work your upper body.
Runings the best IMO but i get shin splints bad so dont do it much.

Calorie counters are horseshit. Don't even bother to read it. Ideally you want to know what your heart rate is while pedalling. Google heart rate zones and read why.

Stationary biking is fine cardio, albeit a little heavy on the quads for my liking. Nothing beats running (on grass!) but you can get some fine aerobic and anaerobic work done on it.

IMO the biggest problem with an exercise bike - especially at home - is that they are excruciatingly boring.

At a gym, if you are behind the right person, the scenery can help ease the pain. For a while at least.

Agree. That's why I only ever do HIIT on it for 15-20 minutes. No time to get bored between crying and vomiting.

This is why you sit it in front of a TV, during one of your favorite shows.

Alot of people go this route. Mine is sitting in a spare bedroom with NO t.v. and NO stereo. I prefer silence when I ride my exercise bike, it allows me the time to listen to the voices in my head.

Are the benfits the same for biking outside ( on a regular bicycle ). I just bought a new bike and am biking almost everyday at night for some cardio.

I'd say its fair at best and that's considering you're riding a bike outside, not a home trainer where your arms hold the remote.

Swimming is much better.
