Elliptical & H.I.I.T
Maybe you guys can help me with this-
I use the elliptical machine:
And I do H.I.I.T for 45 minutes @ 1 min on & 30 seconds off. My question is-how does this compare to running on a treadmill? I am looking to improve my cardio for a grappling tournament in May.
The reason I ask is because my lower right leg / shin area was badly cut and sliced in a workplace accident and if I run a lot I get what I call 'Super Shin Splints" that are incredibly painful. Thanks for the input!

You are a sower of falsehoods. Nobody in the history of the human species has been capabable of doing HIIT for 45 minutes. And an elliptical is no way for a grappler to train.
Go do barbell complexes, and/or pick up a sandbag or sledgehammer, none of which will stress your injury and all of which blow the shit out of that foolish granny contraption.

ok, I think I explained it wrong-I go as hard as I can for a minute, then dial it down for 30 seconds-
as for the rest of it, Thank you- I had a feeling I had been lying to myself the whole time....

That's still aerobic conditioning, which is important, and actually the elliptical isn't a bad way to work on it.
Proper HIIT though is anaerobic and should make you pray for death. You'd better be doing a lot of it if you're going in for a tourny.

I think you are right and I think I have been a wuss. So it is still something I should incorporate, but not rely on entirely, correct?

Google/forum search for the term 'aerobic base' - there have been several decent discussions on it in the past. Aerobic is the foundation on which you build your anaerobic capacity - e.g. if you can't manage to jog for 30 minutes, you probably won't be capable of doing any productive sprinting workouts. A good aerobic base also means you can train technique for hours on end without your body shutting down.
You can likely improve your aerobic base inside of 3 months, but you're probably better off focusing on building your anaerobic output instead, seeing as that's what grappling is all about. Like I said, the best option: whack a tyre with a 14lb sledge for tabata rounds, and do some sandbag or barbell complexes.

There is nothing wrong with using the eliptical rider as a tool for aerobic base training. If it's not any good simply cause old people use it then don't forget old people run too.

Old people die everyday. I'm not jumping on that bandwagon.
