Do i get in shape before joining a bjj gym?

Hey, im wondering if i should get in shape before joining a bjj gym or join the gym and get in shape during class. I am out of shape and i want to learn some mma but i do not know whether to just join and get in shape in classes or if i have to get in shape to learn anything.

Get in at least okay shape first, or you'll be more likely to quit.

I would say just go, too many times people want to get in better shape and they never get into the shape they "think" they need to be and just end up not going. Go to the class and it will get you into shape and get you learning.

Just suck it up and jump into the gym, training will get you in shape. I wasted 5 months 'trying to get in shape' before joining my gym. 5 wasted months I could've spent learning technique.

Go! Otherwise you will always be 'getting ready to get ready' for training.

Go train and get your ass kicked then you got all the motivation you need to get fit/improve tech.

I am not sure what you mean by not in shape. Out of shape differs for different people.

If you are not in shape enough to learn the techniques while doing them slowly you need to do something for about a month before you go, but don't wait too long.

Joe Frazier has a book about boxing training (which I don't recommend because it is horrible) which he says before you step into a gym you need to be able to run 3 mile in 30 minutes, be able to do 30 - 35 consecutive pushups, 50- 60 consecutive situps, some stretching and some light calethenics.

If you are not anywhere close to that, I am going to have to disagree with some of the previous posters and say you need to get into better shape before you start. I know somebody is going to chime in and say that they are a blackbelt and could kick my ass and can't do any of this, but I still think you should get in shape.

When I went to check out my current boxing gym, you had to be able to do 30 pushups/situps for the warm-ups.

If you can carry that off you should be fine.

If not you will learn fast, if you stick with it.

If you get winded walking from your car into the gym, then you should take time to prepare. However, if you can do the guidelines listed above, then you should be fine.
