Dislocated shoulder

I dislocated my shoulder about 5 weeks ago and had to be in a sling for about 3. I went to the doctor last week and he told me I was fine to go back to work but I may need physio. I just got offered a job in northern NWT and if I took it and It dislocated again when I was up there it would cause some serious problems. I was wondering if anyone had experiences with this. For instance what is the chance of this reoccurring again and how much strain would be needed in order for that to happen.

I'd talk to your doctor and physiotherapist about it, they'll have had some experience with people having it in the past so will likely know the likelyhood of re-injuring it.

If there's no feedback on it then I guess it depends on which screws you over more, not taking hte job, or taking the job then getting injured up there.

The doctor said I was fine but it's still a little sore. I don't actually know anyone whose had this problem before and I wanted to know what the chances of it happening again are. Also the doctor's answer was pretty vague so I dont want to base anything on just that.

A dislocation is not the same as another, so there really isn't anyway for anyone here to say what your odds are of it happening again.

Have you doctor give you the name of a good physio and get their opinion on your shoulder. If their opinion is that you should be fine also talk to them about ways to improve your shoulder health going forward as no matter how bad the dislocation was it will be weaker.

What kind of job were you offered in northern NWT? hunting seal?

Dislocations caused by trauma are 85-90% to reoccur. The capsule, ligaments, tendons, and musculature are all damaged to some extent. You will definitely need rehabilitation to get your shoulder strong enough to stabilize with overhead movements. There are several types of braces you can wear in order to minimize the risk of another dislocation or subluxation (Sully® Shoulder Stabilizer)..

I have dislocated several times, being too stubborn to get the surgery needed to fix my shoulder, I just strengthen all the muscles and wear that brace and hope for the best. There will come a time when I will have no choice but to get it fixed.

Have you already gone to physiotherapy? That person should be able to gauge the strength of the shoulder a lot better.

Sorry to hear that you dislocated your shoulder though. I heard it's pretty painful. At least the bright side if you do take the job and you re-injure the shoulder, claim it happened at work and you can collect disability.

I never had shoulder dislocation but I hear rotator cuff strengthening with small weights and therabands is something you might want to look into.

Dislocated my shoulder DECADES ago and it would still pop out at a certain angle with pressure. That's why I kept to striking arts coz it will rarely pop out vs. grappling. I thought about having surgery on it but I realized I didn't want intrusive surgery when I'm not paid as an athlete anyways.

The last time it poped out was a month back on the heavy bag but it was my fault coz of improper timing in hitting the bag. Takes faster to healnow BUT the first dislocation it took MONTHS of rest then slowly did exercise and stretching on it. I've been using a shoulder support thingy which helps a lot. I plan to do grappling too but I'll probably get a sturdier shoulder support just to be safe coz of the nature of BJJ and the angles your hands can be put in. Good luck and don't rush it. Keep it safe too it will heal eventually.

oh and talk to a sports doctor, one who specializes in athlete conditions. They should be able to give you a better advice that general practicioners. I've been doing shoulder and rotator cuff exercises as suggested by my Doc. It probably would never pop out again if I wasn't active in these types of sports. Again good luck it does suck but such is life.
