Deviated Septums?

Does anyone else have it and do you find it affecting your conditioning.

I dont know when I got it but probably sparring or one of my boxing matchs. I am just wondering how and if it affects your cardiovascular conditioning.

I always seem to be having to breathe through my mouth after a round. (which is not a good idea to do in combat sports as I have been tagged a few times with my mouth open in sparring not a nice feeling) I also find myself yawning lots during the day no matter how much sleep I get and regardless of wether I am actually tired. If I plug one nostril and breathe I breathe through one fine but the other side is a noticeble difference in the amount of air I can breathe through it. (very limited)

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with it before and if there is anything I can do about it besides going to the doctor to get it fixed. I am also wondering if there is any point to going to the doctor to get it fixed if I am still gonna be boxing.

Thinking about trying Breathe right strips while working out to see if that helps.
Nasal sprays possibly.

Is this all in my head or is this something that could actually affect my ability to get enough oxygen while training?

I've had this my whole life and it is the bane of my existence. Amazing reading about someone who has the same problems!

90% of the time I'm breathing out of only one nostril. Oddly enough it seems to alternate....not every other breath, but daily or weekly. I'm very conscious of it and I try not to be a gaping mouth breather, but sometimes after a while I do need to take a breath through my mouth. Also I'm conscious of not being the guy who's drowning out the TV with the sound of his nose-breathing.

I look forward to the day that I can get it fixed and breathe like a normal person. Until then, maybe try to think of it as a built in scuba-mask, like fighters use while training to restrict breathing Although it's not like you can take it off come fight time.....

I constantly have one nasal passage clogged, but when it comes time to train I can breathe through both just fine. I do find it extremely annoying though when I can only breathe through one side and I will constantly sniff trying to "unclog" it.

Yoga, Pranayama, Alternate Nostril Breathing, Nadi Sodhana

The Scientific Confirmation of Alternate Nostril Breathing

Medical science has recently discovered the nasal cycle, something that was known by the yogis thousands of years ago. Scientists have recently found that we don't breathe equally with both nostrils, that one nostril is much easier to breathe through than the other at any particular time and that this alternates about every three hours. The yogis claim that the natural period is every two hours, but we must remember these studies were done on people who do not have an optimum health level.

Scientists also discovered that the nasal cycle corresponds with brain function. The electrical activity of the brain was found to be greater on the side opposite the less congested nostril. The right side of the brain controls creative activity, while the left side controls logical verbal activity. The research showed that when the left nostril was less obstructed, the right side of the brain was predominant. Test subjects were indeed found to do better on creative tests. Similarly when the right nostril was less obstructed the left side of the brain was predominant. Test subjects did better on verbal skills.

Medical science has not quite caught up with the ancient yogis yet. The yogis went one step further. They observed that a lot of disease was due to the nasal cycle being disturbed; that is, if a person breathed for too long through one nostril. To prevent and correct this condition, they developed the alternate nostril breathing technique. This clears any blockage to air flow in the nostrils and reestablishes the natural nasal cycle. For example, the yogis have known for a long time that prolonged breathing through the left nostril only (over a period of years) will produce asthma. They also know that this so-called incurable disease can be easily eliminated by teaching the patient to breathe through the right nostril until the asthma is cured, and then to prevent it recurring by doing the alternate nostril breathing technique. The yogis also believe that diabetes is caused to a large extent by breathing mainly through the right nostril.

I had surgery and had mine corrected. It affected me more sleeping than anything else. Now I just train the olympic lifts so breathing is a bit different for that.

I feel your pain brother. I wear the breathe right things to bed and they help a ton. I've never used one in training so not sure if it would come off but the sticky is ridiculously strong.

I'm also looking into getting surgery on mine. How painful was it? Did they have to break your nose and such?

I made a thread earlier after I had a septoplasty to fix it.

Beleive me it felt great. but I bumped it two months after and I'm back to square one. It's made me pretty miserable.

Trust me, wait until your older and you don't train anymore.

I just had two lumps taken out of my nose (polyps), some bones trimmed, my sinuses cleared and the lining of my nose cauterized. I really hope this helps my breathing for cardio/bjj. As soon as the packing was taken out of my sinuses, I could feel a huge difference, despite the clots etc.

I just had a septoplasty to correct my deviated septum - definitely helped, but not as miraculously as I had hoped (doctor also fractured/reduced my nasal turbinates). I have also struggled with allergies and sinusitis and I believe the surgery will definitely help reduce the infections. Aside from surgery, I have the following suggestions:

1) Breathe Right Nasal Strips
2) Multiple daily sinus washing with something like this: NeilMed Pharmaceuticals, Makers of Sinus Rinse, NasaFlo Netipot, Nasal Irrigation
3) Adding some of this to the sinus rinse mixture helped me further: Ponaris Nasal Emollient
4) Supplementing with Bromelain if you also have sinusitis or significant mucus
5) Afrin or similar nasal spray decongestant only on special ocassions or else you will get a paradoxical reaction after about 3 days (i.e., worse congestion/symptoms)

I had surgery on mine to correct it. It worked for about 3 months until the cartilage in my nose started to warp was back to pre-surgery condition. The recovery was a pain in the ass. I just deal with it now. Some days are better than others. Nothing I can really do except try to finish faster during sparring sessions.
