conditoning base before tabata sprints

I've read that before you try tabata sprints you should have a decent conditoning base.

So what I've been doing to build that up is to pick a fast jogging pace. Bout as fast as I can go and still consider it a jog and just go as long as I can without slowing pace. Right now I'm at about 3 quarters of a mile. I could go longer if I slowed the pace, but I want to keep the pace and improve how long I can maintain it.

Anyway, my question is if I can run somewhere between one and a half to two miles at that pace, a fast jog. Maybe 8 or 9 minutes. Would I be at a good enough level to start tabata sprints?

Thanks

If you can run 2 miles in 8-9 minutes I'd say you're good to go for Tabata's.

This is why only kenyan runners are the only ones who do tabatas......4-4.5 min mile is just tough for people over 150lbs

Haha I was way too tired when I posted that. A 14 minute 2-mile time is probably way more what I'm aiming for, but yeah. XD

I didn't run at all and recently I started doing a tabata run as part of Ross' Sweet sixteen. What I had to do was build up my sprint speed gradually over a few weeks.

I'm using the tabata run to train for the longer intervals on Ross' 50 day program.

I've run half marathons, HIITs, and 400 sprints with no problems. I've still yet to try Tabata sprints. I get butterfluies just thinking about them. Anyways, since Tabata's is all about maximum effort, I think doing them at any level of fitness will end with positve results.. and passing out in your own throw up.

The beauty of the tabata is that if it is done correctly, it scales according to your level of fitness.

We can all puke together!
