Conditioning for the Unconditioned

I just started boxing and have been taking classes strictly focusing on technique until I get the basics down. I am looking for a routine I can do to allow myself to get into some sort of shape before I start up their 12-round training program, which I know will kill me if I start it in the shape I'm in now. Any advice on what I should be doing to get me partly conditioned and ready for this class?

Exactly how fat, slow or weak are you now?

More information would help. And read the stickies and faq's. Then you'll know enough to form a more detailed question (and you'll get more helpful responses).

I'm actually pretty skinny 5'9" at 150 lbs but I havent done any cardio in a long time, mostly lifting weights but I took a couple months off. I can probably do most exercises its for how long I could do them, etc.

Might want to invest in a heavy bag. Spend some time building your cardio up. I would add LSD running to the list as well.

dude, you should just start doing the class. So what if you can't make it all the way through. Trying to get in perfect shape so you can get into boxing shape doesn't sound like the right approach. Just start doing the 12 round thing and you'll quickly see the areas you need to work on. Plus it will get you in shape by just doing that.

still dont know what you lack so i'm going to assume everything.

Couch to 5k - C25K Running Program

that should get you started. jump in on the week that you think you are capable of doing.

yes to LSD work, since doing that it helps stamina across the board, helps recovery time too.

the general consensus on this thread is dont get in shape to train, train to get in shape. so go and jump into the 12 rnd class

I would spend less time running and more on the bag. Reason being because you are training to fight. Getting winded running and getting winded swinging for the fences are two totally different things. Getting winded in general is the same though. I'm not saying run, but keep in mind you're training to fight, not to run. When you lose the capability to control your breathing you, you lose your source of power.

Either way, the point at hand is you need to build your cardiovascular system. Particularlly the left ventricle. If you read the faq there is a link to LSD vs HIT (I believe it's the third on down in interesting links). That will give you an idea of what kind of training you want to be focusing on and why.

I would do some High Intensity Interval Training for as long as you can take it.

Shadowbox. You can use a mirror if it makes you it easier for you to focus on your technique. make the rounds the same length as the rounds you are doing at your gym/sparring/competition etc. same number of rounds also. You should also probly do HIIT like interval sprints or run stairs or something. You'll burn fat faster that way and also it'll build that explosiveness that'll help you unleash on your opponent.

good luck.
shoot me a pm if you need any help.
